Timing Chain stuffed - no, it's all good now.....or is it?

This is for the 18R-C experts out there. My RA23 was (apart from having an appetite for oil) chugging along nicely when someone forgot to check the oil, and it dropped below the bottom of the dipstick. We were alerted to this when the engine started making awful rattling and knocking noises! I changed the oil, in some vain hope that some nice new oil would fix it... ha ha. The rattles remained. I parked it for a couple of months to save some bucks and price reconditioned engines, starting it up every week to confirm that it stil made horrible noises.
I finally drove to the engine shop - around 20 kms away, and when I got there to show the experts - it was running as quiet as a mouse! Since then, 500 kms or so, it has not made a single rattle or knock, cold or hot. I noticed in a thread elsewhere someone mentioned a check valve in the top tensioner on the 18R occasionally blocking up. Could it have been this, and could it have somehow unblocked itself and returned oil pressure to the tensioner?
Also, what is the likelihood that I have done damage to the chain? We only did forty or fifty kms in it's rattly state.
It seems to be running fine now - no loping or uneven idle, revs smoothly.....
Help?
