Problem starting my st162 Thu, 24 June 2004 06:16 Go to next message
Ey all,

I have a problem trying to start my celica, once in ~40 starts the car just wont go. All I hear is a click but no noise from the startermotor or engine.

Its seems if I wiggle the + terminal, the car will start. I have cleaned all the terminals but it has made no difference.

I read something about a relay going to the startermotor but I havent seen any wireing diagrams or pics.

If any one can offer me some suggestions it be great.

Cheers

Yeah i had the same problem, on cold starts, i got NRMA to fit in starter relay kit, and my cars started everytime, although i think my starter motor is about to give, but yeah starter relay seem to do the trick, about 89 bucks.

KICK IT!!! Or maybe put some fuel in it, nah just kidding, it's most likely your starter, because normaly you should hear a few clicks if it isn't. 2c

The starter problem is a well known issue with ST162's, especially now that they are all approaching 20 years old. It seems to be more a case of when it will happen, not if!

Here's a couple of threads in the 4th gen forum of celica.net that may help you:

http://celica.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_t opic;f=32;t=000569

http://celica.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_t opic;f=32;t=002493#000000

Do a search for "starter" in the 4th generation forum at celica.net and you'll find heaps of other posts about it too, since it's becoming such a common problem.

Hope these help!

Hmm something new happend tonight, now when my car starts, just after it kicks over the starter gives a clicking noise, I think it may be on the way out. I will have to see about getting a starter relay. Ill get the mechanic to have a look today.

The starter is probly sticking on. Better fix this before your looking for another flywheel. Get a recon starter.

Ok

I may have fixed the problem (touch wood Razz)

As i found that I already have a relay installed (zip tied to the + cable), I decided to disconnect it and check all the connections. As i removed the tape from it, one of the connection fell right off. I cleaned all the contacts and put them on more securly. I taped and ziptied it together and it hasent happend since.

This would explan why shaking the + battery termanal would fix things but then after a drive it would not start again.

Also the starter is sounding normal again.

I hope its fixed.

Thanx for the help everyone.

I think I have the same problem. This morning I tried to start my ST162 and all it did was click over and over, and the lights/stereo flashed on and off and i heard nothing coming from the starter motor etc.

I'm reading some pretty useful info on that celica.net site, but I'm having trouble understanding the diagrams for the wires etc. I'm not sure if I'm doing the right thing by doing this either...

Confused

first thing to do is check to see if you have a relay, if you do, then the wires may be loose, or the fuse maybe blown. If you dont, then you will have to get one.

The diagram is stupid and very hard to follow, look at what wire they say goes to each pin, its easy to figgure out then.

*I HIGHLY reccomend you solder the terminals on the relay, saves you from haveing the problems i did*

Heres a description right from the celica.net forum, posted by 88BlackGT-S

"This fix was posted by me over a year ago when I was just getting into fixin' my car, so here goes again. If you can wire a car stereo then you should have no problem with the starter relay fix.

Buy a 12V auto relay, wire the terminals as follows(only 4 wires to hookup):
87 - +12V (fuse this wire at battery with 30 amp)
85 - Ground (battery or chassis your choice)
86 - starter solenoid wire (ignition side)
30 - starter solenoid wire (starter side)

***The starter solenoid wire is the smaller wire coming off the starter. Black w/yellow stripe I believe, there is a connector which you will have to cutt off in order to splice in the relay. While you are at it remove starter and check the big wire for corrosion, if so replace or clean up. Starter is located underneath the exhaust manifold. Pain in a** to remove, but worth doing at least once.

You can use solderless terminals or you can solder all the connections for even better reliability, best to use 12 to 14 gauge wire for the connections. Wrap everything with electrical tape to keep out water and dirt."

Ahh thats cool, but if its a loose connection on ya relay, dont let the mechanic charge you $xxx to fix it, do it ya self and save a few $s.
