Ok well next Sunday the car is going into my garage and all the Timing gear, sprockets, chains and tensioners are being replaced with brand spanking new ones
i've bought myself heaps of gear like oil, oil filter, coolant, harmonic balancer puller and the timing kit i should get on Monday or Tuesday,
i also plan on buying a steering puller to pull off the steering linkages, head gasket, manifold gasket, sump gasket and some gasket sealant but am i forgetting anything, what else should i buy to do this big job and have you got any tips for me that i should know about before its too late?
for example should i replace any other items while i'm at it? should i replace the harmonic balancer or just keep with the one on it?
any idea's, suggestions and tips would be great

Changing the timing chains, tensioners and all the other things are quite annoying, but i spent 3 months driving around in my celica without a timing guide. And let me tell u, there wasnt a time where no-one was looking at me. The rattling noise was so annoying, so i decided to buy the kit for it. The only thing i can tell you is that do everything what u want the first time. Its a pain in the arse to find out that something has been on the wrong way or something hasnt been put in.
Also make sure oyu dont drop anything down the front of the engine, because it leads to the SUmP, and thats a messy job too.
If you dont do it right, you'll have to continuously take the head off and off time after time. I did it more than 10 times, im being serios. IT was FRIGIN so annoying. Also make sure you put all tensioners in too. If not, there will be too much tension on one side, and not enough on the other. This will result in the breaking of the timing arm, as i realized after. Also make sure you get the right KIT TOO.. THey gave me the wrong one. One for the 18r, or something so similar, but missing stuff. THats why i spent 3 months trying to figureout why it wasnt working and timing arms kept breaking. I have a lot of experience with the timing side of the 18r-c engine. Need any help or any questions answered, just write something and il get back to ya. GOOD luck.. Also i have some timing chains and timing tensioners too ( ALL BRAND NEW), so if you live close by or wanta buy at very reasonable price.. Just a thought

well i've already ordered the timing chain kit from auto one so i may as well just get that, less frigging around also good point you make, do you know how many bits should be in the kit? that way i can count everything and know i have the rght one also to change all the timing gear you take the head off and the timing cover but do you really have to take the sump off? as i don't really want to do that again if i don't need to.
but yeah mine was getting a bit noisy then today its gotten shocking sounds like a bloody diesel
but once its done i think it should sound like a new engine as thats the only noise its making is the timing,

Yeh easily get it done in three days, also with three mates. It shouldnt take that long to do. The things that stopped me from doing it much easier was that i didnt know much about what was going where. But learned from the mistakes. Best way to do it is start from the bottom of the front of the engine and work your way up. Make sure that everything is tight, and on the right way.. he he.. Also good tip, when you take the cam off, and as you are taking the head off tie a string to the timing chain cog, so you have an idea of the right timing when you put the new one on. there should be 2 chains, umm.. i forget u know.. Ill have to get back to you on that one. But yeh, its a pain in the bum to do, but once you do it, it goes like a dream.

so do you need to take the sump off?
and from the workshop manual it shows 4 chains, two go from the bottom to centre sprocket then two from the centre sprocket to the top,

Yeh your right, but i think there are two chains, that turn into 4 chains. I think thats what you get in the package.
Hey do you know any particular site on the net, where i can find pictures of 18r-c engines, and 18r's??

No you dont have to take the sump off. ALl you have to do is take the head off and the timing cover. Then get stuck into it.
You only have to take the sump off if you drop something in it. Dont do that.
So how's it going anyway? Are you doing it today?
Dont worry about scanning anything, thanx anyway.

nope doing it this Sunday, i got all the bits i need now in total its $280 went to toyota to get some new sprockets and thats about $280 so stuff that idea, i'll see what the current ones look like and check the ones on the old engine and if they are both really bad then thats the only time i'll buy new ones, car should run really good after, its loosing more power every day as the timing goes out more but soon i'll have all that back and a bit more
also got 6x9 speakers today after 2 years i'll finally have some bass compared to driving around with two, two way 4 inches
