converting 18R turbo to EFI - update: new turbo manifold Sat, 31 July 2004 09:28 Go to previous message
hi folks,

update of progress of this rather unique beast (18R with turbo, EFI and digital spark) intake manifold is now welded and assembled.

history: originally was setup as suck-thru carbi in front of a T04 turbo. On it's last cruise (to Dubbo in Easter) it ran uber-lean and i stuffed the ignition timing making things even worse, so the plans for EFIing were brought forward.

progress: Intake manifold (little more than a log with runners) has been modded to accept 4AGZE injectors and now has a throttle body. Fuel rail has been modded to suit the injectors (tho the in/out pipes may have to be changed). Exhaust section of manifod has been removed and new (and better) manifold is being built to suit a t25 (better suited to a 2 litre engine and comes with b/in wastegate).

The plenum isn't quite large enough, and the angle of the injectors isn't ideal either - but i've got limited space to work with so i think it's a fair outcome. The car isn't going to be a daily driver so a smooth idle isn't that important. And with a small plenum, perhaps throttle response is going to be interesting Wink

fwiw: For a mates rate job (i bartered an ECU and wiring assistance for all the welding) i think it looks pretty cool

The ECU will be a Megasuirt running the fuel and spark. i'll use a temp sensor and the aircon system to directly run an aux-air valve solenoid so - as well an ex-camira aux-air valve doing duties at starup - so the ECU won't do any cold-start idle control but will still do cold-start enrichment.

Most of the parts have now been organised (tho i've managed to loose the pickup for the dizzi in my tool room again) so once the turbo manifold and intercooler piping is in place, we'll fire it up.

thanks to: Ben (people100) for the welding and locating the 4agze injectors; Stewart (oldcorollas) for being the australian Megasquirt evangalist and group-buy oprganiser; Bigworm for the t25 turbo.

(sorry these are small and a bit crappy - i'll rebuild the slide show with larger images and lighten them all)

and pics of the original manifold setup can be found here:

and you can find more thru the link in my sig.

updated to include post on turbo manifold - see pic and links down futher.

cheers,
Charles.
