pettie gauge problem?

hey
just bought a 74 ta22 a week ago and the pettie gauge is all f**'d up...
when the tank is full the gauge reads 3/4 full, and then it drops from there, it reaches empty and sure enough you do have another quarter tank to drive around on, however i want this problem fixed... ran out of pettie too many times already 
i assume it's either the gauge is screwed up or the floater in the tank isn't working properly...
how do i go about fixing this (mainly referring to the floater)?
