How to RAISE your 3SGTE from an ST185 GT4 Sun, 15 August 2004 08:52 Go to next message
I borrowed this from Alldata.
I still think dropping the engine downwards is easier but this could be of use to anyone wanting to raise OR lower the engine out of their ST185.
This information is also 99% the same as removing an engine from an ST205 and probably also an ST165.

Yep, I'll agree with your statement, bringing the assembly out from under the car is easier!!!

are you shitting me I don't think its possible to get the engine out the top, may be in a 185 but (I wouldn't have thought so) i know in a 165 that with the gearbox still on the engine, it is wider than the car (well from the points were the side mounts bolt to the frame) it cannot physically fit through there) and you can't get the gt4 box off while the engine is still in the car, so it has to be dropped underneath. but thats the 165, 205 and 185 may have a wider bay due to the wide body.

My approach was:
Remove engine loom from cabin and sit on the intercooler
Unbolt map sensor, idle up switch, coil & ignitor, resistor packs and sit them on the engine.
Remove airbox & assoc pipework
Undo radiator hoses & water to air IC hoses
Undo aircon pipework from compressor and unhook from the front crossmember.
Undo fuel line from top of regulator
remove lines from charcoal canister
undo the 2 or 3 earth straps
undo the steering column from the power steering rack
undo gear selector cables
undo clutch line
undo brake lines from struts
unbolt tailshaft
unbolt strut tops
unbolt crossmembers
lift the car using hoist
tada! you now have the whole shebang out of the car!

It's not impossible to take the 162 engine out of the top with the gearbox, wouldn't the 165 be close to the same? If so then it's not that hard, that's the way I took my 3sge out and put the new one back in, first experience I'm sure it's easier to drop out though Smile

I believe it is possible to raise out of both the 185 and 205... only a few mm of clearance either side and more of a hassle but it would be possible.

I have never raised the engine out... not worth the hassle as far as I'm concerned.

I posted this up for those who didn't have a choice in the matter due to lack of equipment or whatever.

You are heaps more likely to damage something if you lift the engine instead of dropping it.

step 1, grab yellow pages and find a good workshop
step 2, Deliver car with list of work needed
Step 3, Wait for said time frame, then start ringing every 2nd day for next two months trying to get car back
Step 4, hand over shit load of cash to get car back
Step 5, run in as per instuctions
Step 6, give it all it's got to see how it goes
Step 7, cry about dollars spent for nil result
Step 8, Flame said asshole on every forum you can
Step 9, read this very post as to how to remove engine
Step 10, get the boys around with a few beers to help with the backyard job
Step 11, finish off job after a week and read this post backwards to install engine
step 12, put "spare" (read leftover) nuts and bolts in glovebox just incase you workout where they go
Step 13, do burnout, heli or what ever you can to test and enjoy
Step 14, sometimes the most important post pics of hand with massive cuts, missing fingers, etc showing how you did the job at home cheaper than the first time you sent it out but don't mention the 6 months off work when you couldn't do anything or even drive
Step 15, tell your mate to get f@#ked when he tells you it's still the same.

Hope you all enjoyed this step by step guide, it can be applied to any car but you will have to find the right post from your car's engine removal Razz

haha so true.

PS All spare nuts and bolts must have come from the body of the front cut and are un-needed in this application... you can safely chuck these in your random bits pile so that you can use them if you ever lose a bolt while disassembling the engine next time. Very Happy
