18R head reco... what else while it's apart? Mon, 13 September 2004 11:44 Go to previous message
Hi guys

I'm a litle bit new to the 18R thing, so these may be previously covered questions. Unfortunately with an '18R' search you find every thread ever written so I will just ask again and be done with it Very Happy

I am changing the head over and doing a reco at the same time. While it's apart, what else should I be doing? Normally I'd replace the cam belt and check that the tensioner is in order. Unfortunately I've never worked on and don't know anything about chain-drive engines so is there anything I need to be aware of or should be looking for?

Are there any problematic things that should be replaced or checked while it's all apart? I'd prefer waste time/money now on something that may/may not need doing rather than getting stuck taking the head off again in 2 months time!

My current list is:

* Cylinder head full reco
* New head gasket
* New side gasket
* Coolant
* Thermostat, gasket sealant
* Oil
* Oil Filter
* Spark plugs

All of that totals about $300... farks me why anyone would want to put an imported engine in their car, I forgot how damn cheap stock engines were!!
