3SGE 3SGTE bellhousings Mon, 20 September 2004 11:03 Go to previous message
I've had a couple of inquiries about 3SGE or 3SGTE bellhousings to fit W series gearboxes.
I've sold some to people here in NZ and a couple to OZ.
I'm no longer keen to find them at wreckers, clean them up, box them up and send them off to people all over the place.
I took me quite a bit of searching and a bit of luck to work out what fitted what and where to find them - I hope lots of people benefit from my efforts.
If you copy this to other websites I ask that I am acknowledged as the author of this info.
I take no responsibilty for any problems you might encounter if you use this info.

3SGE or 3SGTE BELLHOUSINGS TO FIT W series GEARBOXES
You can have starter on left or right.
Starter on left.
Look for a bellhousing out of any manual C motor powered rwd toyota. This is identical to the S to W bellhousing! Probably the most common would be diesel powered LiteAce or maybe HiAce.
Get the slave cylinder and clutch release arm. Get the bellhousing to block support brackets and the metal companion plate that fits between bellhousing and block. these will suit the S motor as well.
Starter might fit as well I think.
OR
Starter on right
Look for a bellhousing out of any manual Y motor powered rwd toyota. This is very similar to the S to W bellhousing. Probably the most common would be LiteAce or maybe HiAce.
Get the slave cylinder and clutch release arm. Get the metal companion plate that fits between bellhousing and block. these will suit the S motor as well.
Starter fits but might cause problems in AE86. The bellhousing to block support brackets... not sure if they fit, can't remember sorry.

"BUT" you say, "the LiteAce and HiAce has a G series gearbox not a W!"
No problem - the front bolt pattern of the G series gearbox is exactly the same as the W series gearbox. Bolt it up and be happy!

If you have a Y series bellhousing? That will work well and give you the starter on the right. You just need to slot or fill and redrill one hole and it will fit the S series motor fine. You might need to mill 5 to 10 mm off the face of the bellhousing - see below.

With a factory S motor to W gearbox setup, the pilot bearing sits in the centre of the flywheel instead of the centre of the crankshaft.
This means that you have to:
1 - mill 5 to 10 mm off the face of the bellhousing so the input shaft will reach into the end of the crank (you would have to insert a pilot bearing into the end of the crank). OR
2 - fit a pilot bearing into the centre of the flywheel. OR
3 - find a bearing that is wider than the standard pilot bearing so half of it sticks out beyond the end of the crankshaft enough to accept the input shaft.
4 - make an adapter that fits into the end of the crank. This adapter holds the pilot bearing 5 or 10 mm out from the end of the crank so the inout shaft will fit into it.

Starter motors - The starter motors from rwd S or C motors should fit the C or S bellhousings ok I think. The starter motors from the Y motors might be ok, not really sure. Gabe from WA says he had to use another starter (I don't know what one) to keep clear of the AE86 steering.

Good luck
