 remote start using alarm

this ain't really toyota/weather related, kinda ricey in a way, but I've been toying with the idea of adapting my car alarm for remote start.
If i could find a voltage output from the radio reciever for when I press my panic button on my alarm remote, then hook that up to a couple of switches, etc to give power to my coil, and say starter motor for 3secs (or couple a switch to my tacho to take voltage from the starter once it gets some revs), then in theory i should be able to start my car using my alarm remote. 
I've read about it being illegal in some states with manuals, and if its done dodgy it could be dangerous, but i just want to know if it could be done, that is without buying a $3000 alarm system.
anyone had any experience doing anything like this?
