Questions for an '82 MS112 Crown engine upgrade/conversion Mon, 27 September 2004 12:29 Go to previous message
Hello

Please excuse the life history below I just thought I'd give some background.

Big thanks to the resources of this site, I've been reading as much material as possible on the subject of engine conversions for Crowns and Cressidas alike.

Yesterday I acquired two Toyota Crowns, a 1981 and a 1982 Royal for $600. The second crown aka the "wreck" was metallic brown and in excellent shape, still shining like new. And absolutely no rust anywhere. The interior is nearly perfect except for one door top being sunburnt. I note this model includes power mirrors and a digital radio. Still has the factory mag wheels too. Best of all it came with a gas conversion! The catch is that it didn't have an engine but that got me thinking...What engine will fit other than a 5M?

So far I have the following considerations:

* I know any M series engine will fit provided it came out of a car that had an M engine. A 7M-GE or 7M-GTE seems like a simple choice since it will be a fairly straight forward conversion. I also know that 7M's are notorious for blowing head gaskets due to a fault from production, that can be easily fixed. 7M packages can be picked up fairly cheaply but there aren't too many about.

* I have read that 1UZ-FE engines will fit (especially after reading this). I have reason to believe since 1UZ's were available in the UZS131 '88+ model Crowns it's possible that I don't need to create custom engine mounts for the newer models...Thats what I think. 1UZ half cuts can be gotten for about $500-$1000 more than I'd pay for a 7M.

* I can also try a 2JZ conversion but this is most likely to be both expensive and difficult, since the JZ series of engines were never released in Crowns. There are a number of Cressidas using 1JZ engines but these came out of a Chaser which apparently is a similar car.

I could stick with a 5M-E (got a working one now with only 190000km, thanks to a certain 'bomb') but I feel the engine is just a bit too small for a vehicle as heavy as a Crown. I'm not so much worried about performance (I know that any engine upgrade will yield an extra 100 hp than the original engine) but more so with fuel efficiency if I can get away with it. Putting a larger engine in should decrease the amount of fuel I need to use when climbing hills etc. What I am after is an engine upgrade that won't involve drastic changes to parts of the car ie how easily could it be done?

So far, I've been sold by the 1UZ-FE engine, being reliable and economical.

I have the following questions about a 1UZ-FE conversion, using this thread as a small guide:
(whats a good engine to put in a 76 crown?)

- As far as I know from sources, the newer the Crown was the easier it was to fit the 1UZ
- I don't know wether by using a Crown half cut will mean that I can just bolt it straight in. It would be nice I'll say that much!
- I may need to change the steering to rack and pinion; however with the lack of 1UZ Crown conversions this might only be the case for MS5x and lower Crowns. We looked at the position of the steering box it *seems* like it won't get in the way of the exhaust manifold...Well this is why I'm asking.
- The fuel pump may need to be upgraded to handle the increased flow
- Brakes may need to be upgraded (so far I know it is for the benefit of the driver)
- Gearbox cross member and tailshaft may need to be modified.
- I imaging the speedodometre is electric whilst my one is cable is there any way around that?

Is there anything else I might be missing? What would you recommend as professional toymods members?

And I apologise in advance about the largeness of this post.

Many thanks in advance for any advice.
