Help wilbo choose a new paint colour?
|

hi folks,
Wilbo is tossing up colours to paint his car... rather than let him make a sensible decision, i think it's vital that the opinionated and senseless among us make that decision for him...
the only given is that he would like to paint it himself so a single, light colour is probably easier. (this is not the actual car... but for our purposes it'll do):
This is my suggestion (boring but you can get stuffed if you disagree) but it's too dark:
Lite Blue (for the inner hair-dresser):
Pimp (well... err... easy to find in a car park):
Mustard (for when a hairpiece and viagra isn't enough):
any other suggestions?

les & brett: how did i do it? smoke & mirrors
actually: for those for you wanting to know:
-requires a version of photoshop with adjustment layers
-manually select outline of car
-copy selection into a new layer
-in the new layer, select the windows, trim etc that wont change colour
-cut-n-paste that non-coloured stuff into a layer above the colouring layer
-for each colour variation you add an adjustment layer to the middle 'colouring' layer that is linked to the that layer (e.g. only acts on that layer, not everything underneath)
i mostly used a 'selective colour' adjustment layer to change the coloured layer, tho for the pink and green versions it was easier using a 'hue & saturation' adjustment layer.
For each variation i simply turned on the appropriate layer, saved a copy as a jpeg and tried to keep images under 100kB
the original file with all the layers etc is a 4.5 Mb Photoshop file (version 7).
If you would like a copy and have suitable email capacity i might email you the PSD file (PM me off-thread for this).
oh... many appologies to Wilbo for having some fun at his expense.
cheers,
Charles.

if you squint when staring at the monitor it kinda looks flat
there's too many reflections to remove to make it look flat (see how johal's matt black version turned out.
but if someone has heaps of spare time time, they could model it in 3D studio or lightwave or maya and we could paint it in fur

personally i'd keep the black bumpers, colour coded look crappy imho.... they break up the mass of colour... but whatever
i think the dark blue would be nice- but how about that dark grey/bronze on the jza80 supra? could be interesting...

I think MA61's look great in white, provided you leave the black bumpers and trim intact, and of course tint the windows as dark as possible. White is easy if you're doing a DIY respray as well!
Most of the colours above just don't suit an MA61 IMO.

Good to see that there is no bias from the gang of guys that have white supras
Think thats an interesting colour....also I wouldn't mind playing around with colour coding and what not! (maybe white/black stipes and trim...)
Oh and kudos to the ppl with talent! Charles and Johal are photo shop kings!

If you choose that, you may as well sell the MA61 off and get a Trueno
On the serious note though, choose a colour, reckon that blue looks better but candy blue would be nice
That's my 2 cents worth.
Cheers.

On this topic, what do ppl think about the idea of painting the engine bay a colour such as black (so that I can put the new engine in and whatnot without having to decide what colour I actually want the outside of the car )

If you want to paint the engine bay a different colour, I'd go with a light colour so leaks etc are easy to identify. Definitely not black!

I guess thats fair enough, but I think a white (and any other colour) just wouldn't look good? Black just seems to be a colour that I think would work regardless of the colour of the rest of the car?

How about a Drak metallic grey like the current Crumpledore colour called "Turbine"
Personally I think the darker colours suit the MA61 better, although white can look good as well

what makes all those colour changes look good IMO is that they have pissed off all the black trimming on the car
makes it look more modern and not so retro

What? It's meant to be retro, it's 20 years old! Trying to make an old car look "modern" is always a mistake, especially with an MA61 which couldn't be more 80's.

i dislike the retroness
i think if when people paint there cars they colour coded the bumpers and strips down the side(or pissed them off)
door handles and all it would look heaps better
hence why the black ones look better than any other colour

Um, if you dislike retro why would you buy a retro car?
Like I said, trying to make an old car look modern just makes the car (and you) look silly.

Bah OMG how could you dislike the retroness (or as I like to call it the essence of the 80's )
Supra's are the most 80's looking car I can think of (with datsun 260z' close behind ), and I think that has a lot to do with the flares, I mean they are seriously the car version of shoulder pads!
(omg didn't the 80s have some bad shoulder pad-age going on tho!)
Cheers
Wilbo
