ST185 Starting Problem Thu, 07 October 2004 07:56 Go to previous message
Hi All,

Ive done a few searches but I havent found a previous thread that addresses this problem. Hope you can help me.

My problem is that when my car has been sitting turned off (hot or cold) for anymore than say 5 minutes when i go to restart the car it cranks well but wont kick over.

To be more precise the longer I leave it the longer it takes to start and all the cranking is flooding the engine as is evident from the plumes of black smoke coming out of my once neatly polished exhuast when it finally does kick over and start running (on 2 then 3, then finally all 4 cylinders) hehe.

However If i start it within approx 5 minutes of shutting it off it starts normal....or if its been left off over the whole weekend it starts up with little trouble. Its just that grey area inbetween 5 minutes and a couple days that really gets to me.

I have a completely new ignition system (except igniter as they are about AU$400 over here) and once the engine is started and clears itself it runs like a dream. so im suspecting its fuel. Possible leaking seals on the injector fuel rail is seeping fuel into the engine and is flooding it or wetting the plugs to prevent a spark. The reason why it starts fairly normally after a couple day break is because most of the fuel has evaporated away. Or thats my assumption atleast

Im going to test my theory with a set of flow tested 540's with new seals balanced out with an apexi S-AFC to lower the duty cycle. If the freshly flow tested injectors with new seals solves the problem I will post the results immediately.

The above mentioned parts I bought are for upgrading performance and hopefully they will kill 2 birds with one stone, but if anyone has experienced something similar to this and found a solution I would love to know, as you are reading a post from someone who is desperate enough to have replaced his leaking T-VIS manifold without removing the head on his ST185 because it was in the list of diagnostic procedures in the 3S-GTE engine supplement!

Please Help
