Thought you all might be interested in this.
I knew the meaning of some of the letters in the model code but not all of them.
Note: I tried to modify this information so it was relevant to all toyotas.
As an example, the Aus Spec ST185 GT-Four Group A model code is explained below:
Model: ST185R-B L M Q Z Q
Key: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Legend:
1. Basic model code (I'm sure you all know this bit)
e.g.
AT180= 4A-FE engine
ST182= 3S-FE or 3S-GE engine
ST183= 3S-FE or 3S-GE engine with 4WS
ST184= 5S-FE engine
ST185= 3S-GTE engine with 4WD
2. Steering wheel position / body shape
H= Wide body (seen in Japan only)
G= Wagon / Van
L= Left hand drive
R= Right hand drive
3. Model name in the same platform
e.g.
A= Corona
B= Celica
C= Carina
D= Caldina
4. Body style
C= Coupe
E= Sedan
G= 3 door Hatchback
H= 5 door Hatchback
L= Liftback
K= Convertible
T= Hardtop
W= Passenger Wagon
X= Cargo Wagon
5. Transmission
A= 5 speed auto
F= 6 speed manual
H= 3 speed auto
K= 4 speed manual
M= 5 speed manual
P= 4 speed auto
6. Grade
B= Base
R= Standard
D= Deluxe
N= Mid-level (General)
M= Mid-level (Upgrade)
Y= Luxury (small car)
E= Luxury (non-luxury car)
S= Sports, normal performance
G= Higher grade (general)
V= Luxury sports
Z= High performance (not top of the line)
Q= The highest grade (ultimate in luxury or performance)
e.g. for the ST185
S= ST, SR
G= ZR, GT, 2.0 GTi-16
V= GT-R, GT-S, GT-Four A
Q= GT-Four RC / Group A / WRC
Z= GT-R Active Sports
7. Engine (anyone know any more of these?)
K= Twincam EFI
Z= Twincam EFI Turbo
F= Twincam EFI (high performance)
S= Single cam, carburettor
E= Single cam, EFI
B= Hybrid
X= SOHC, Diesel, Turbo
Y= Twincam, EFI, Turbo
8. Destination
A= USA
K= Canada
Q= Australia
W= Europe
G= General & some Europe
_= General
[edited to include crappy diesel wagon details ]
[note: Original table is believed to be from Allwheelmotion http://www.allwheelmotion.com/arvinfaq.htm]

Cool i never knew there was so many.

K= Twincam EFI
Z= Twincam EFI Turbo
F= Twincam EFI (high performance)
S= Single cam, carburettor
E= Single cam, EFI
B= Hybrid
Y= Twincam, EFI, Turbo
One thing isnt the

It might help us settle that on going argument as to whether a "Sprinter" is just a normal "Corolla"

I'll take a photo...it's definitely an H
I wonder if it's a domestic market thing...H seems to be on a lot of the Yahoo auctions sites.

Hmm just did a google search and there is a lot of results for "ST185H" pretty much all in Japanese.
Does anyone else have an H in their model code?
e.g. AE86H etc.

"H" after the model code designates Wide body model as far as I can see.
ie. GA70H

Sounds reasonable... Since the JDM ones came out as both wide and normal body and there's nothing else in the model code to say that its wide body.
Probably only really applies to JDM as most other countries got one or the other, not both.

hmmm, looking at some plates that I have here not sure how well it adds up...
The SA63 plate....there is not way that the car had "Q= The highest grade (ultimate in luxury or performance)" (but that is what the plate says )...also the Cressida only had "N= Mid-level (General)"
(also have an MZ10 plate that says 'H' instead of R/L as well)

Are you sure the Q on your SA63 isn't the Q that refers to its destination?
Also your Cressida wouldn't be "Highest Grade (Ultimate in Luxury or Performance)" unless it's the Grande!

The other website explained some of the differences in mine:
CT190G-DWMMX
C: C series engine (cough cough SOHC diesel)
2. this is not just limited to left or right hand drive
G: wagon or van
7. engine
X: turbo diesel
quite surprised that mine is listed as a "mid spec" although it is the base spec wagon.
Although there were 3 van models below (the base of which has manual everything including mirrors, no A/C, and has a radio with no cassette player!!)
Is there a way we could compile this list so we keep adding new codes as we come across them?

OK for SA63R-BLMQCQ
SA63 - S = Engine family
A = Platform Family
63 = Model Code
R = Right Hand Drive
B = Model type Based on A platform (ie Celica/Supra)
L = Liftback
M = 5 speed floor mounted Manual.
Q = Trim Grade (Q denotes Highest level luxury or performance available for that model and that appears to be a GT)
C = Single cam, single Carb, emmission controls
Q = Built in japan sold in Aust.

OK If anyone has codes to add I'll put them up.
I added the H for jap wide body, the G for wagon and the x for dodgy diesel engines.

with regard to engines only.. I've seen all of these with my own eyes, with the sole exception of "D"
G => performance (often wide valve angle?) DOHC (4A-G, 3S-G, etc)
F => economy (often narrow valve angle?) DOHC (4A-F, 5S-F, etc)
C => single carb (K-C, 3K-C, 4K-C, 4A-C, etc)
B => twin carbs (K-B, 3K-B, 2T-B)
D => dual carbs? (superjamie has this in the oldcorollas FAQ, not sure why...)
H => some emissions thing (3K-H? had one of these for a while but don't remember the difference between it and the 3K-C)
E => EFI (4K-E, 2T-GEU, 4A-GE)
L => leaded fuel? (4A-LC)
U => unleaded fuel? (4K-U, 2T-GEU, 18R-GEU)
Z => supercharged (4A-GZE, 1G-GZE)
T => turbocharged (any colour you like)

Just for the record, the first post was with data copied straight from Jose's page.
http://www.allwheelmotion.com/arvinfaq.htm
He gave me permission to use his data on my page (which was mentioned by Maphril).
I have added heaps more of my own stuff as well.
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/stepho/ne wcodes.htm
I also have a page for engine codes.
Some of this data came from Matti (who never answered my emails) but most of it has been verified by me from other sources (manuals, vehicles, brochures, etc).
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/stepho/en gcodes.htm
I think it addresses most of the questions raised by members.
I try to add to it whenever I can.
If you can see any ommissions or mistakes then please tell me.
I'm sure I looked into the difference between -D and -B engine codes a few years ago but I can't remeber many details.
I think it was something to do with dual carbs on high compression (ie super fuel) and low compression (regular fuel).
It was only an issue in the late 60's and early 70's when super first became common place.
My Corolla web page list some examples of cars with the K-D, K-B, 3K-D and 3K-B.
Lastly, Jose listed things such as "highest grade".
These are naturally a generalisation.
Toyota sometimes made a model which really was the highest grade in that year.
But sometimes it added something even better the year after.
So they just picked another letter.
They were very inconsistent on grades (LT/ST/GT/EX/GX/G/S/etc), so it is not possibly to definitively make a short table.
In the end I just made a simplistic table that covers it the best I could without being too large.
For real accuracy you have to drift through my pages on specific cars (eg Celica, Crown, etc).
Cheers.

Thanks for the -D/-B update.
I will add it to my page.
Yeah, I know it's an old thread.
I wouldn't have added to it except that it's in the FAQ section and I get a lot of questions about such stuff.
FAQ's are best when kept uptodate.
I wanted to put Jose's name in there because he was the orginator of the data.
Many have copied his work (this is said with no malice).
L/R
If not present then you can assume RHD (Japan is RHD).
So, yeah, in a way you can say it's for export markets.
Australian made Corona's also left out the R/L code but they are also RHD.
Cheers.

Very useful info. I used it a while back to make a summary for KP Starlets, confirmed with a whole lot of real cars as well.
