intermitent wipers are intermitent

OK so my INT wipers dont work all the time.
Maybe 1 time in 10 they actually go!
Wipers work fine on other 2 speeds.
I'm guessing the contacts in the switch are worn or corroded but I also have this vague memory in the back of my head that the Intermitent wipers are controlled by a unit similar to a flasher unit for your indicators or christmas tree lights....!!
Reason I ask is I would rather locate and replace a unit first before pulling apart the AW11 dash and instrument cluster.
Am I tripping with this idea??? Or do I have deep dash surgery this weekend?
