7M Starter Motor Troubles - Anybody?

I think the starter motor on my 7M (92 Cressida Grande) has unfortunately had the dick.. all i get when i turn the key is a click.. no whirring and the engine isn't turning over at all.. if the engine kicks over at all, it'll start without any problem..
i put a jump starter on it the other day to no avail.. as yet i havent NOT been able to start it, it just takes about 50 clicks and then it will start perfectly in one go..
so.. my diagnosis would be that the throwout (solenoid) IS working and:
a) the gear on the end of the throwout is hitting the face of the flywheel
possibly in conjunction with
b) the electric motor in the starter has had the dick and its just not spinning the starter gear even if it does engage with the flywheel
are the 2 gears (starter motor & flywheel) synchromesh?
my theories are most likely incorrect and i am hoping for a little enlightenment hahah
