NTDS (Active Directory) restore question

O.K.
The problem I have (well, someone else, actually ), is this:
They are running a single W2K DC (eg. cat. server etc) and it's A/D has died...in that no client machines can logon nor can any of the A/D MMCs be run...
Now, we didn't sell this box to the bloke, nor did we install the O/S etc (Our only involvement thus far has been to install/configure an ADSL router (with 2nd NIC) and to configure TS in apps mode for remote runing of MYOB etc.
Anyway, the 'box runs a hardware mirror, which is fine. However, it DOES NOT run any kind of backup medium whatsoever!!!
(When I initially went out there I ran rdisk's W2K equivalent, so at least they have some kind of system-state "backup"
Question is, can the A/D be restored (through A/D restore mode) without a full tape backup? (ie. with the data from the "repair" directory).
Failing this, if I uninstall SP3 will that restore a "snap-shot" of the previous system-state, or just replace earlier versions of files etc?
Any (knowledgeable) input appreciated...
