Surge tank info?

Just wanted to see what kind of info was available for surge tanks, ie. how they're used, what applications, etc. I was thinking of using one, but I don't really have anywhere to put it except in my cargo area. I don't have rear seats so that makes for a LOT of cargo area. Most people I've seen put one in their boot area as it's close to the fuel tank. Mine is right under where the left-rear passenger seat WOULD be, but I don't know if I'd get it passed for engineering.
Anyone have any info on these?
