quick questions about 4AGE into AE86, fuel tank and dizzy Wed, 03 November 2004 05:24
ok, first of all, thanks heaps to everyone who has helped me so far, i really appreciate it.

assumption 1.

to fit the high pressure swimmer pump in the petrol tank, i will need to drop the tank, put the pump in there (im assuming there is a brasket or something to hose clamp it on to)run the fuel lines to the inside of the tank (i have an adaptor to go from 8mm to 6mm barb fittings), then replace the 20 year old hard rubber items with nice supple high pressure ones.

i could get away with leaving the return line as stock, as it wont be under pressure, but im going to replace it too.

sounds pretty straightforward, im just a little reluctant to drop the tank for some reason.

question about the dizzy:

the engine i have is a smallport, which was running a bigport computer. i have decided to use a smallport computer, and have all the bits to do so.

it is runing a bigport dizzy, which has a 3 wire plug that attatches to it, the smallport plug also has 3 wires, but is a different connector.

apart from this, are they the same? i hope they are, as i am thoughrougly sick of tracking down 4AGE parts.

things about the exhaust:

i have a box full of 2 inch mandrel bends and flanges, but after taking the rear half of the exhaust out i am starting to chicken out of making the exhaust system myself, im afraid of having it all wrong and rattling and hitting stuff.

someone convince me that it will be easy, im planning on copying the shape of the over diff bit in 2 inch mandrel pipe, then just running straight bits between. one thing that has me slighly confused is the fact that the downpipe comes off the secondaries of the exhaust manifold on an angle, instead of pointing straight back, but i have to look into this properly.

any input is appreciated, thanks in advance.

if anyone is interested, here is what i ended up doing for the fuel feed/return in the engine bay.

feel free to not read any further as none of this is particularly interesting.

starting with the fuel rail, i hacked the nylon tubing off the banjo fitting that is bolted into the fuel rail, revealing an 8mm barb fitting. i jammed 6mm fuel line onto this (seemed OK) then ran the hose to the metal tube fitting on the firewall.

Tis fuel line only goes to the driver's side front corner on the engine bay where the fuel filter is, so i replaced the old plastic filter with a generic high pressure one from supercheap, and used barb fitting adaptors for go from the 8mm fittings of the fitler to the 6mm fuel lines in the car.

for the fuel return i ran fuel hose from the 6mm return fitting on the fuel rail to a 6mm-4mm adaptor, then ran 4mm hose from that to the standard 4mm steel return line.

i bought the adaptors at pirtex, they consist of one size barb that screws into the other sized barb. this is where i got the proper EFI style norma hose clamps too, i highly recommend the pirtek in bayswater for all you melbourne people, the one in yarravile is USELESS.
