Turbos installed, now almost no boost Thu, 18 November 2004 07:28 Go to previous message
Here's the story so far:

* Got a pair of HKS turbos from Japan. Package came with 2 turbos, dump pipe and oil lines.

* Installed it all onto the car (a few issues, but all were sorted int the end. Needed to customise oil return lines)

* Went for a drive... boost appears to be coming on at the correct time (~2500rpm), but will only build 1psi per 1000rpm. If I give the car hell, I might see 10psi at 7200rpm. I know this isn't right, cos a few mates with the same kit on their 1JZ pull 20psi with ease below 7000rpm.

Things I have checked so far:

* Vacuum lines. All appear in order. Connected to the correct locations. Wastegates hooked up to positive boost reference.
One minor issue here, the HKS wastegates have 2 different nipples on them. One above, and one below the diaphragm. I have hooked up my lines to the nipple above the diaphragm. I *think* this is correct.

* No rags in the intercooler piping (checked just in case).

* Pulled off wastegate lines completely. Boost still behaves the same.

This would lead me to believe that the wastegates are open pretty much all the time (unless an exhaust wheel is dead). I haven't checked the exhaust wheels (should have done before installing, but the turbos and dumps were all attached to each other and pulling them apart seemed more effort than it was worth at the time).

I have tried pulling on the wastegate rods to see if I could open the flaps by hand, but they seem very tight (I couldn't actually make them move).

Have I missed anything, or does anyone have any other things I can try before I go pulling the turbos back off again to have another look. I don't fancy the 16 hour pull down and put together procedure, but if I have to, I just have to.

Any help is much appreciated.

By the way, the car was working perfectly on other turbos at 17psi prior to installation of these turbos.
