W57 or W58? Wed, 01 December 2004 23:34 Go to previous message
Hey ppl, now I know theres been a lot of discussion about this, and there still doesn't appear to be a definitive answer as to whether some W58's come with alloy sandwich plates. Well anyway my W58 died... monday night it lost second gear, today it decided to lock itself in 1st on the way to work, managed to wrestle it out and drive home with just 3rd and 4th (no 1st or 2nd gear anymore)... a mate had just bought a "W58" for his car, happily onsold it to me knowing I needed it more. However I was a little dubious upon seeing it as it had an alloy sandwich plate. Now the guy he bought it off reckons he had the ratios counted and it is a 58... what I'm hoping you guys can do, is provide an honest opinion about whether this new box is in fact a 58, and if so then why it has an alloy sandwich plate?

Also people claim 57's and 58's are almost identical, that the 58 isn't stronger, so will I be fine running it if this IS a 57?

*Linking because the images are fairly large so I don't want to load down anyones connection unnecessarily*

W58 that I've just pulled out (Note: this is a w58 out of a GA70 supra that came with my manual conversion kit)

Supposed W58 that is about to go in...

Direct comparison of both boxes...

Something I noticed written on side of MY W58...

The same location on the supposed 58, but different number...

Now the supposed 58 is supposed to have come out of a MKII Supra, and the chassis plate I've been told says W58. Could it be that MKII supras did have W58's but they were alloy plated as opposed to the MKIII supras steel plated W58's? Or is it more likely that the gearbox has been replaced at some stage with a W57?

Help me out guys, cheers Smile
