Hi,
Dunno about the top piccy, but the second piccy is legit. Check out some sites on clouds and weather and you'll see them. They got a special name and it happens under certain conditions.
I've never seen it in real life and I'm glad 'cos I think I'd shit myself also.

Hi,
Yeah! Shit! I'd be filling my pants big time if I saw that over my head. Reminds me of (I think I got the movie right) Independance Day when those spaceships come down to earth with a massive cloud display around them.
Lucky for us the aliens used BSD Unix so we could put a virus into them. And, while I'm hijacking, remember the computer instructions that flowed on the screen in Terminator, when he was processing info? That's a 6502 processor - a la Apple2 vintage. Sorry for the hijack - I'll go back into my box now.

You can see a little tiny outline and some remains of pixels around the telegraph poles in both pics.
I reckon they're fakes.

Ref back to the Bday thread.
Only a few here would know what a Aplle 2/2e was. Still make a good unit when about 10 are linked up together.

Got the 'offical' word from a mate of mine who used to work in the BOM.
"It's mammatus cloud. The first is one of the most spectacular pics I have ever seen of it.
Mammatus cloud usually forms under the anvil of Cb and it is indicative of a turbulent area of mixing between rising dry air and descending moist air. The word has the same root as "mammary" as the cloud is thought to look like udders hanging from the cloud."
So there ya go.

There was a nice patch of these yesterday over Fairfield. They were located on the trailing edge of a big cumulonimbus that had just passed over.

The pixelation is a result of a sudden change between 2 surfaces, indicative of a high level of jpeg compression.
jpeg is designed to cater for gradual transitions, but the nature of the approximations mean that high contrast areas result in pixelation. The higher the compression the worse the pixelation.
If you require proof take a photo of high contrast (I just used my black phone cord on white desk) edit the photo and increase the jpeg compression rate, and you see exactly the same pixelation.
