Stereo mounting Question Wed, 22 December 2004 03:22 Go to next message
To allow me to fit the guages into the MA61, I am looking at fitting them where the stereo currently sits.

This then leaves me with the issue of trying to fit the stereo somewhere.

Essentially, one of the easiest spots is the centre console (in the armrest storage tray).

Any issues with mounting it vertically (it is a CD/Radio unit only) - heat ? CD operating vertically ?

Or are there any other suggestions ?

Cheers

Michael B

I have seen em mounted vertically before, heat shouldnt be a problem, only thing i can think of would be dust getting inside the unit or other foreign objects or maybe spilt drinks Smile.

But if its inside the actual compartment then it should be ok I would think, best check with a carsound place about vertical installations, might be different for different brand units.

Cheers,

Dust

You might find shock issues mounting it vertically...

Having it in the centre console would also breach the industry standard - which is basically no more than 2 seconds not looking at the road to operate a system you are familiar with. But as far as i know it is legal.

You could do a highlux style mount and put it on the roof... but running cables is a bitch...

Thanks for the quick reply guys.

Essentially the car isn't a daily driver and the radio/CD will only really be on after a drive back from the hill etc, so there won't be too much fiddling around, but valid point Squid.

99% of the time it is on, it will be on the radio and one station at that.

Roof mount means even more work !!! I have a hard time doing what I don't now.

Anyone else ?

The gloebox in the MA61 is pretty small and it is already full of 7M-GTE ECU Laughing

Why not make things easy for urself and put the guages in the center glove box? unless its a boost guage or something that needs attention, but if its just temp guages shouldnt be a problem right?

The guage are oil pressure, boost and EGT, so I'd rather have them within easy view and do without the stereo...

Plus the guages look really schmick - they are HKS Electronic ones.

Aren't most guages a single din height?
Can't you squeeze them in above the deck (if the deck is at the bottom)

Or, remove the ashtray, and put the guages there.

The deck will look shit anywhere else you put it.

I wish it was that simple.

If I stagger the guages, they just fit in the opening with about 5mm to spare.

The guages are the bigger 65mm diameter ones and the stereo does not fit in the slot (width ways - the std unit on the car was butchered to make it fit Sad ) and I think that the way the ashtrya sits, it won't go in there due to the angle and the depth that would be needed.

under the seat? Razz might sound stupid, but if you get one with a remote?

Easy to cable...and if its only going to be an on off thing....

Just a left field suggestion Smile

Get rid of the stereo...

They only add weight...

Although I do like my music... I'm sure you could get away without a stereo if it ISN'T a daily...

Take out the centre air con vents!
block the holes back up in the dash and mount either the deck there or the guages?!!

It is starting to look that that is an option.

Had a look last night and it is too big to fit under the armrest without totally rooting that part of the console.

I wont fit under the glovebox without major surgery and mounting trickery.

Putting it in the centre air con vents will involve too much work and will look a littel naff as well.

Under the seat is an idea, but I don't want to spend extra money.

I guess there are 2 options left ;

1. Get a smaller unit - does one exist that is smaller than a std stereo ? (preferable)
2. Leave it out alltogether

ANy other suggestions ?

Cheers for the input so far

The head unit will still be the same size which is about 180 wide by 50mm tall.

It looks like the stereo may get the flick Crying or Very Sad

Oh well, weight saving !!!!

the controler im talking about was a small little thing like half the size of the face of a head unit and you dont have to mount it.

If you don't mind buying crap, Sony decks have an option of a wired remote control (not wireless).
So put the deck in the hatch, put a stacker in the hatch, and wire the remote stalk (kinda looks like a cruise control stalk) somewhere, maybe on the steering column.

Then you just have to learn to control it.

Having the stacker gives you the option of having many hours of music without swapping a cd.
An MP3 deck will give you the same thing.

Also, AXIS Marine series have a radio wireless controller (radio comms to deck). You can mount that in the dash somewhere, even on the door skin.

Let me try and find some pics.

The NEW sony one appear to be wireless, hopefully radio, not infrared.

http://www.strathfield.com, Autobahn or JB HiFi would be the places to get it cheap.

Wired/RF remote with HU in boot is about your only option.

However, there are quite a lot of companies that make such things, not just those listed here.

Best thing to do is go to a large car audio store and ask them what they've got. I know that JVC and Pioneer USED to make wired remote HU's as well, don't know if they still do.

I see no problems but if u r concerned abot heat u can always take off the top cover and wire in a PC chassiss fan. They wont effect your stereo but will cool your stereo jsut as long as it is wired on the inside with sum extraction holes

but hey id neva trust my words
i ussually get things rong hehe

good luck should be fine neva the less

You are right Ed, but it is the drive too and from the said "drive areas" that the stereo will be used.

That said, it looks like it is going into the for sale section soon Cool
