Have a build up of black soot/carbon on the exhaust pipe, gas milage not that good.,
'95 3SFE auto Rav4 approx 100,000klms.
I replaced the air cleaner and put a
bottle injector cleaner thru.
After a trip away and plenty of highway driving, still black as ever...any ideas?
Thanks
Pedro

Thanks for the suggestions.
I've not seen Seafoam in Sydney, apparently its a famous fuel-additive head cleaner/ oil-additive desludger.Wynns may have a similar product...
Before resetting the ECU and changing things,I'll set the trip counter between top-ups at the bowser so I can accurately figure out how bad the actual fuel-milage I'm getting first......
Cheers

Alchemist wrote on Mon, 10 January 2005 22:08 | Wouldn't it be common that a combustion engine would leave carbon(black) deposits anyway? I mean if you have black smoke pouring out the back that's bad, oil rings or something. But most car exhausts are always a little black, and if they are shiny someone is polishing the chrome.....

thats perfectly normal for it too leave carbon deposits on the tail pipe most cars have that. yeah theres alot of people who do that. If it something bad you'd think he would be going through a bit of oil hey? so thats what makes me think if he gives it a tune up he might get better mileage and hopefull get rid of the black smoke.

It was the heavy buildup of carbon in the exhaust tips that made me suspicious despite the car appearing to start and run smoothly....fuel use putting around town this week by the missus has calculated out to be close to 12.5 Litres/100 Klms.

For an econobox engine, thats not too flash! What do the rav4's usually get?
I get that sort of economy from my 1g-gte

then again a Rav4 would be heavier then a SV21 Camry with a 3S-FE?? the Camry gets an excellent fuel economy (especally highway). It got driven from Toowoomba QLD down to Cabarita beach NSW (did abit of driving around the Gold Coast,Tweed heads and Kingscliff) and back today and there still half a tankout from around 470kms? (60litre tank).
