Hey there guys,
I know the basics of what a Shift Kit for an auto transmission does but just wondering if you guys could not only reinforce what I already know but also provide some further more detailed specs/info!
cheers all

drastically reduces the shift time, by giving a (typically) more brutal gear change. as a result, this type of kit often reduces the lifetime of gearboxes... but has been proven to shave a lot of time off an auto 1jz soarer's 0-100km/hr

Do some searching, this was covered recently. Looking for MV Automatics might help.

so in turn.. what can one do, instead of a pricey manual conversion, to a car that is auto to speed things up a bit and give more performance with the transmission

reducing the life of the gearbox...
I don't want it to just fuk up one day
but yeah I'm still deciding on the whole idea - pretty sure I'll get it!
also, wats with stage 1 shift kit - stage 2 shift kits etc...

dude, driving hard reduces the life of the gbox, winding up the boost reduces the life of your gbox. if you want your gbox to last as long as possible, drive like a grandma and keep your car stock
I think (but am not sure) that the stages relate to how much faster the shift is.
typical dorifto jap "stage" crap.

Beware-as lots of dudes convert to manual, your existing auto will be lucky to bring you $150 bucks-and that won't even buy you a stock clutch.......

A rework of line pressure isn't always 'bad' for the box - by reducing the amount of slip, you're reducing the amount of heat+wear between shifts, especially under load. The tradeoff is the rougher shift, which is what many of us LIKE in an auto anyway It's a lot cheaper than converting to a manual box, and if you generally like having an auto anyway, you haven't got too much to lose. I say well worth it.
