hey ppl
i've got a 1988 supra with a 1g-gte in it at the moment.
would it be worth doing an engine conversion to a 1jz engine???
would it be possible to use existing electrics and gearbox+ exhuast 'n shiitza??
or a total front cut of a soarer would be the easiest and cheapest way?
It might be an expensive route, but i would also would want to rebuild the 1jz engine.
what do yuo guyz think??

Hehehheehh
no probs i'll let ya know if i decide to go through with it.
The car has only done 60,000km,
i know that exhaust and box might(will) have to go>>>>
just want ppls advice, if they have done a similar conversion
and if they have done it themselves.
The only car that i have pulled apart is a 1970's Valiant Charger
which was very basic. The engine came straight out, and ya didn't have to worry about electrics.
It might take awhile to do the conversion on the supra(might need custom bits and pieces??, or will it be pretty straight forward??? dats the question i really want to know.

Yes it would be worth doing the conversion, since it would make your not-fast Supra into a fast Supra. And that's all good.
No you can't use the existing electrics, gearbox or exhaust - it's all different.
Yes you should get a half cut, but don't get a Soarer, get a JZA70 Supra half cut as it will be a direct swap.
Forget about rebuilding a 1JZ, just buy one that isn't rooted. It would cost a small fortune to rebuild a 1JZ.

yea problem is how can you tell if the engine (1jz) isn't rooted????
besides from knocking and stuff, and you can't exactly hear the engine running.
cos i've thrashed the absolute fuk out of my mums ford laser
and it's still ticking away with no real probs---thanx to many oil changes. Gearbox and clutch is screwed, and i'll be suprised to see it last for the next 20-30,000kms.
suppose i might get one from a wrecker, with box and wire as a package. It would be fair to hear the engine running for 4g's??
plus when wreckers tell you how many kms the engine has done, are they bullshiiiting to the max....or generally are they (most)
on the spot. Seems to doggy to me.

If you buy a half-cut, you should demand to hear the engine running before you pay for it. All they have to do is hook up a fuel pump, so it's not that hard. I started my front cut while it was sitting in my driveway, even had the air conditioning running!
Apart from that you can do the normal things to check an engine's health - do a compression test, take the rocker cover off and have a peek at what's inside, check the inlet piping for excessive oil buildup, stuff like that.
As for your mum's Laser, I don't think it's fair to make a comparison between a thrashed shitbox and a high-performance engine like the 1JZ. Granted there are a fair number of crap 1JZ's coming into the country, but if you've got half an idea you should be able to pick up a good one.
