Strut issues, what should I do? Thu, 13 January 2005 13:47 Go to previous message
I'm in the process of freshening up the suspension on my '162 and have a problem. I need a new bearing cap (strut top) to replace one that has been punched up about 4mm by a loose shocker. I also need new bump-stops for both front struts. Judging by the new (louder) sounds it makes I suspect the actual strut may be damaged. I am planning to install KYB shocks (they're inserts) and 30mm low King springs (already purchased).

I think I have two options;

1 - Buy new parts. The best prices i could find were $80 for the bump stops and K-Mac strut tops for $290. All up $370. I've searched already and read some negative things about the K-Macs, but they're $60 cheaper than genuine Toyota parts. (!?)

2 - Buy 2 second hand complete struts for $120. This would include 2 strut tops and the bump stops. It'd also provide a spare should the strut housing in the car be knackered and let me save time by pre-assembling the struts before dismantling my car.

I'm a povo student on a tight budget, so I'm asking what you more experienced guys would do in this situation? Is it worth installing 2nd hand suspension bits in the car or a waste of time and money in the long run? Or should I fork out for the new bits? HELP!

edit: bad maths
