sorry this is gonna be long:
ok its been asked a million times but i really need my sprinter brake upgrade soon so i can safely put my gze in. having been told the series 4 rx7 brakes are the way to go, i rung around and got a best quote of $400 for the hubs, rotors and calipers from SSS automotive (this was a far better quote than anyone else btw). so i go to pick them up and the guy sees i have a sprinter and recomends i speak to this guy from melbourne called ian whose the only guy i should get to do the conversion for me so anyway he calls him up for me i speak to him and i find the whole deal is gonna cost me $1800 and that will include different struts and control arms so i lose my rose jointed camber adjusters and blisten shocks. im glad the guys at SSS let me onto this before i blew $400 but ANYWAY what im wanting to know is can anyone give me some contacts of who to speak to for a brake upgrade. wanting to spend around $1000 all up not the price of my car. i know heaps of people ahve gone the celica strut upgrade but i want more stopping power htan that and i wanna keep my struts. please someone help me out i need to stop!
thanks

Do the Celica strut upgrade and then throw on some MA61 hubs/rotors/calipers. I guarantee you it will cost a whole lot less than $1800! From memory it cost less than $500 to do this on my RA23, and that includes new pads and wheel bearings.

Doing the celica onto sprinter strut conversion which steering arms do you have to use? Can i use ra60 struts and brakes as i can get them cheap. Which strust do you use for the hilux conversion?
Thanks

i was sort of hoping to keep my struts... i dunno if you can use AE86 shocks in the celica strut? cause i dont wanna let good bilsteins go to waste and also keeping offset is desirable cause i like my curent mags also. im not rejecting the celica strut idea, im still keeping it in mind but im sort of using it as a last resort. common peoples someones upgraded their brakes... and i know some of you have the S4 conversion who did it for you if in sydney? and dont say you sent it to melbourne

This guy in Melbourne, does he happen to work for Sean Moloney?
You might want to have a talk to the guys here: http://www.mrenforcer.com.au
They helped me out a lot with this sort of thing in the past.

I used Commodore discs and Magna calipers on the front of my previous Sprinter, just fit in a 14" rim. Stops really well, gives you a bit of a long pedal but not too bad.
Can't remember off hand which models they were off but it's a reasonably common mod. You don't have to screw with the strut.
Got the whole lot fitted for $1000 cash.

the hilux (LN106 4 pot) calipers bolt to XT130 corona struts as they share the 90mm bolt spacing for the caliper mounts...

Magna discs/volvo calipers - I never got much past preliminary measuring for this, but it can be done without TOO much work and shouldn't break the piggybank.
But also, with RA60 struts, you can keep the AE86 shocks, castor rods, etc. - just need ra60 struts (with the ae86 spring cups), and lower arms.

Ribbo, my old man mentioned volvo brakes, doesnt know whether the go on or not but says their 4 spotters are dirt cheap.
dorikin, do you know the rotor size of the corona strut? is it vented? do you know anyone who has put hilux calipers on this strut and do ae86 shocks fit in the strut?
oh and thanks youngy for the contact ill definately give them a looking into.

The problem with Volvo calipers is they're fricking heavy, which is bad news for unsprung weight...

When using the corona strut you use a pergeot 604 disc. This is 273mm dia. Dorikin said machine it down to 266mm. This is the srut to use with the hilux caliper. The shock will fit but will need a spacer or shortening.
I got all this info searching the forum. USe ln106
I got a price of $65 each for the calipers is that good

They're both effing heavy cast iron units, and the Volvo calipers have shitty pad surface area....not sure how that compares to the Hilux 4 spot.

why cant there just be a disc that fits nice behind the hub and a caliper that simply needs a mount made up and its all cheap as chips?

Yes it is a bitch and one that very few people have a difinitive soultion to.
I also happen to be looking into an '86 brake upgrade. But my method is this.
- Borrow a Strut
- Hunt through the DBA catalogue to find disc with similar height (offset) and center hole dimensions.
- Buy discs as 'blanks'
- have drilled to stud pattern
- Then custom caliper adaptor to suit some decent 4 pots. (after checking adaptor requirements with my engineer)
Sounds simple but of course this will take some (much) hunting but hopefully ill come out with something worthwhile.

as far as i know the AE86 struts are same dimentions to the XT130 struts, so springs and shock inserts will fit.
the hilux calipers are heavy, yes, but they are of very good design, and have a very large pad. in my setup (see avatar) i'm using pads from a Mitsubishi GTO as they have BIGGER pad area than the hilux pads.
the pad length (119mm) and the upper pin mounts are shared by many other performance japanese factory 4 pot caliper. this is great news as pads from heaps of other cars fit - 200SX, 300SX, WRX, GTO, R32/33 skyline, etc...
if anyone wants to know more specifically about the corona and hilux brake setup, email me... since doing it myself, i have good knowledge of it. quarter_sfear@hotmail.com and check out many pics on my site below

My brother runs volvo 4 spots on his TE35 with RA60 struts and discs. He does have clearance issues with the wheels (he is running a thin spacer) but he is using 14" standard rims. He did have to use custom mounts. The thing pulls up brilliantly.
As far as unsprung weight goes, yes they are fairly heavy, but I also think the added increase in unsprung weight is more than made up by the increase in braking ability.
IMO I think in some ways unsprung weight is overrated. Yes keep it to a minimum, but sometimes compromises need to be made for increased performance (bigger brakes, stronger struts, bigger diffs etc)
Volvos (there are several varieties of 4 spot) can be made to fit under 14" rims. The S4 RX7 fit better under 15"s. The hilux's sound pretty good, particularly as the others need custom mounts.

dorikin you got mail.
thanks everyone for all the ideas... ive been stressing out lately over this cause i wanna hurry up and get my gze in so i can get rid of my last point on my license. problem is i havent got the time to do all the hunting myself so now i got the ideas i can leach off everyone else im definately gonna look into this XT130 strut conversion as it seems to be the way to go, especially if i can bolt hilux calipers straight onto the hub and use the standard disc temporarily. im just praying this works out are htere much differences between the hilux models in regards to their calipers? and also the XT130 strut will retain sprinter wheel offset yes?

I will have a set of KH Laser TX3 Turbo fronts available soon - discs, calipers. They will fit in 14" wheels. Disc size is 257mm, ventilated.
