78 Corona Speedo Unit

Hey Guys,
With my corona the speedo doesn't work instead sits on 100 KMH and it will just stay there regardless of how fast im going, now i took
it all out on the weekend and there was heaps of stripped metal shavings from the stem going into the main unit WTF! is this?
Should i pay 75 bucks and get a recalibrate etc or go to the wreckers and get myself a 2nd hand one?
Also the fuel and temp guage arn't working, now i checked the sender units for both of them and cleaned them up with some soft emery paper and still won't work, so whats the go?
any help appreciated,

other thing to check is when you drive, do it slowly. does the speedo cable turn.
do this very slowly with everything out so you can see the cable. maybe the cable has snapped too.
