Damn steering problems...

ok, so my damn car is driving me mad....
i'm having a bit of an issue which i just cant track down.
i have a very annoying rattle/shake in the steering when driving straight. very noticeable at around 80km/h. as soon as i put a little bit of pressure turning either way it dissapears.
Car has nolathane bushes, steering rack was rebuilt last week which is what i thought was the problem. wheel alignement was done then. balanced the wheels a while ago but it doesnt feel like its coming from there. plus i put my stockers back and it does it exactly the same thing. ball joint, tie rod ends changed not that long ago and seem ok, wheel bearings changed at the same time.
Now,
when i have my car jacked up and wiggle the wheels, i dont have any play when i wiggle it top to bottom. when i go side to side i have play, and i cant for the life of me see where it is coming from.
not sure where else to look. i took it to a steering place but the old guy there just started goin on about it being too low etc, which is not a fix to my problem. when i first got it lowered it was fine, but this is prob 4 yrs ago now,
any thoughts or recommendations for a place to take it to get it checked out would be great...
cheers
