ST162 Engine swap - halfcuts and emissions

Please forgive me if this has been asked before, I have done a search and not come up with too much.
At the moment I am tossing up between two choices for an engine swap for my ST162 Celica:
- 3rd gen 3SGE from a Celica halfcut from Japan
- 2nd gen 3SGE from an Australian delivered MR2 rear cut
As far as I know, there is emissions gear fitted to Australian delivered cars (EGR etc) that cars sold in Japan would not be required to have. Would the imported motor still be OK here or would it not comply and therefore need emissions gear fitted to it or something?
Obviously I would prefer the 3rd gen 3SGE but if emissions etc are going to be a pain then the earlier version from the MR2 looks good because at least it will already have it fitted. I don't know all that much about the rules and regs for this so if anyone can shed some light or point me in the right direction that would be great. I don't want to splashing out on something that may turn out to be illegal or get me defected.
Cheers guys,
Matt
