18R-C question

I recently, (on saturday) acquired a stock RA28 celica that needs a bit of work. The 18R-C is stuffed (auto choke). I have on hand another 18R-C, this one is manual choke. Are there any problems switching the two over considering the original is auto choke and the replacement is manual choke? I know its probably a stupid question, but I have no idea if it has any impact on the swap.

Nope, shouldn't have an impact.
The only difference is on the carby there will be a pipe for the auto choke which sits on the exhaust manifold. When the manifold gets hot heat goes up the pipe which causes a spring to expand which opens the butterfly in the carby.
On an manual choke to open up the butterfly when the car gets warm you push the choke cable in inside the car.
It's just the carby's that will be different. All you'll have to do is run the manual adjuster through the fire wall into the dash. There are holes in the Fire wall for it. I've got an auto choke on mine, but it didn't work with the extractors so ran a cable for an manual, so I've got the 2 on mine.
Other than that the engines are totally the same, it's just the carby. You could even put the auto choke carby strait onto the new engine and won't have to worry about running the cable.

Yeah, I don't mind the manual choke either. If I want my car to keep high revs I just close the butterfly and it takes off a lot better cause the rev's don't drop as much. Always good in a drag.

Yeah at the moment the butterfly opens up all the way as soon as she starts so she revs straight to 4K. Bit of a piain in the ass, I dont know whether it is the auto choke thats stuffed or what cause she started fine the other day.

Maybe the butterfly is a bit sticky. Nothing worse than when your car idels higher than when doing 100km! You said current engine is stuffed so it's probably the same thing with the Carby. If you're swapping engines and carbie's it's probably not worth a rebuild kit for the carby. Do what I did, disconnect the butterfly, You have to let the car warm up for about 5 minutes before you can drive but then at least the rev's aren't as high.

Not sure if this is much help, but i just took the 18RC out of mine and have all parts so if you get stuck and need parts or anything just tell me and there yours i dont need them.

Ah, when mine was dissconected it was open so when it was hot it didn't rev too high. Only prob was when it was cold you had to warm the car up before you could drive.
My understanding of how it all works is that when the car is cold the butterfly is closed (auto choke) then as it get's warmer it opens up. I had a problem where mine reved really high cause the butterfly wasn't opening.
If the rev's are really high when she starts it could be a vaccume problem. We were fiddling with the carby and went to start her but left a hose off and the rev's went up to the red line and would have kept going if I didn't turn her off.

Thats probably it then, the hoses are all cracked and stuffed, hmm go get some new ones or wait for the replacement 18R-C heheheh

The choke butterfly isnt what speeds up the engine at idle.
The choke butterfly only increases fuel usage.
The choke will have a few little levers or other linkages that cause the throttle butterfly to stay further open than normal that then gives the high revving.
Dont get the choke butterfly and throttle butterflys mixed up

Thats why I didnt understand why disconnecting the choke butterfly would help as that has nothing to do with how high the engine revs. I will await my new 18R-C I think
