Putting sounds and burn marks on 3SGE head! Virtual mechanics needed!

My car has been behaving oddly the last few days. Other than some strange sounds and smells, it runs okay, but I know something is wrong. Here's a description of what's been going on:
o The car has been making a 'putt-putt-putt' sound while accellerating, less present while cruising. I know what it sounds like when its low on oil or pinging, and its not like those.
o The car's temperature has been sitting a little higher than normal, even though the weather has been getting cooler. It would normally sit at about 40%, now it's sitting ~47%.
o I hear small backfires on every gear change now
o I popped the bonnet to check on the oil (which was just below full) and I noticed black burn marks around the engine head, and also the insulation in the bonnet was all burnt out around the head.
o The oil pressure gauge seems a little less responsive than usual, may be my imagination.
Sorry the pictures suck, my mobile phone camera doesn't like low-light sitations and I didn't have another chance to grab photos:

(Hard to make out, but the light spot in the underside of the bonet is a hole burnt in the insulation)
I'm no mechanic, but I've got a few theories:
o I think I heard a small pop while I was driving, and the sound started from that point on. It wasn't long after I replaced my straight through exhaust with a traditional muffler. I hypothesised that the extra pressure caused by adding the muffler blew something up front (the marks seem to be above where the factory extractors sit).
o I filled up my oil two weeks before. I didn't think I over filled it, but I wondered if I did, and maybe that caused something to blow.
o My car was running really out of tune for a while (lots of pinging under accelleration) and I only recently got that fixed back up. I wondered if some damage was done during that time. My engine isn't in great condition to start with, the piston rings seem worn as its burning more than a litre of oil ever 1000k's.
I can also record a sound file of the 'putt-putt-putt', if it would help.
Does anyone have any knowledge of the sitation? I'm working full time at the moment, taking public transport, and so I don't have a chance to get my car to a mechanic for a while.
