Funny noise in my AE86...help?

hey guys, as said i own a AE86 sprinter, the engine is pretty nackered but anyway....
i was driving down to the shops the other night, and i was on a straight in Fourth gear, at around 2500 RPM and suddenly, i heard this rough grinding, shuddering, kind of sound from the rear of the car. I am gonna go down and check the oil in the diff today, but i was wondering if any one has had a similar problem or could help me ? i also thought that maybe it could be a slightly bent tailshaft...but i need help! does anyone know what is up with my car?
