clutch prob.... Tue, 10 May 2005 10:26 Go to next message
umm long story short, I didnt notice that my clutch fluid reservoir was nearly empty. Yesterday i had trouble shifting into gear and yeah, got home and looked at my reservoir and it was empty. The clutch pedal also stopped springing back when i push it in. I topped up the reservoir this morning but the clutch pedal still doesnt spring back, and im still locked out of all the gears except for first.

I dont know how I managed to drive home yesterday like that...I couldnt shift into gear. For some reason, I could shift when the engine was off, so on the straights, i had to turn the engine off, shift to the next gear, then turn the engine back one. On the last leg however, although the clutch pedal wasnt completely springing back, i could shift to 2nd, then to 3rd, but i couldnt downshift back to second...i dunno im confused y this happened.

I'm guessing that i must've been driving with the clutch fluid below the minimum level for sometime. And after driving like how i did yesterday on the way home...that cant be good. I'm just wondering if any1 can explain what happened on the way home and the extent of the damage to the clutch or transmission if any...

I've booked the car in for a service so yeah, i hope i can drive to the mechanic.

Did you bleed the clutch when you realised it was empty, or did you just fill it up?

yeeeep, cause now youve sucked air into the hydraulic clutch line.
bleeding is pretty simple, search and youll find how to do it.

You may have a leak. It'll be hard to tell without fluid. Fluid's not that expensive, so first off do the bleeding, test clutch operation and then monitor if the level is going down.

the pedal should spring back whether there is fluid or not.
there is a spring on the pedal itself and one inside the clutch master cylinder.
your MC is stuffed, and the slave is probably close to it.
trans and clutch are probably OK, and any damage/wear was previous to this.

i dont understand why you couldnt drive around without the clutch?

i can do this quite simply.

out of gear, into neutral, lean with firm pressure onto the desired gear, and rev the engine up and down til the gear grabs and engages.

synchros are there for a reason.

i do it when i cbf moving my left foot on the drive home from work.

i know it cant be good, but meh.

lol cost of a gearbox rebuild versus cbf using the clutch haha

what about starting it tho. you'd need to crank it in first down the road which would kill the battery after a while and be a hassel if someone parks infront of you.

well, i managed to drive it to the mechanic
getting outta the garage was bit tricky at first, cos it was stuck in reverse so i had to heel toe my way out. then i had to turn off the engine to shift to first. had to drive in first gear the whole way, but lucky for me, its only about 2 km away. then hit the trafic lights, bit more heel toeing to prevent stalling...

i have a similar problem with my car and was
looking for some help/advive..
here goes.. last week i went to start my car and realise
i didnt want to go into any gear other than reverse..
with a large crunch.. ive tried to bleed the clutch but
quite franky made a mess of it by putting air in the lines
Confused would this be the master cylinder or the lines??
ive done some research on the kits from supercheap
are they simple to use an will this fix my problem??
i just got my p's now woth no car to drive..

if you dont know what your doing it is best that you get a mechanic to look at it. you really need 2 people to bleed the clutch
