What is this?

Excuse my noobness but I was checking the car a few minutes ago and discovered this:

What's the likely cause of this? I'm not sure if it's just dirt that got heated up or something else? Oh and I discovered this before driving the car anywhere, so it was a cold-engine.
Anything I can do to prevent this happening?

have a feel of it.. does it just feel like mud ? or does it feel greasy ? the way to sort of leaks (if it is that) is start where you can find the mess then work up. if that is fluid (couldnt say what sort casue to me i looks like mud) there will be a hose or a join or something leaking it.. should be fairly straight forward to find.. my guess id mud. clean it up and look back tomorrow

could be
- crusty old bars leak?
- mud mixed with oil?
- some kind of silicone sealant?
just degrees it and then hose it.. check back tommrow if its there again.

*shudder* reminds me of what oil looks like after the head gasket blows. I certainly hope it's something else though.

If it blows, it'd be a perfect excuse to get a new engine/project going... mmmm. lol
Haven't done anything as of yet, I'll most probably degrease it tomorrow and see what's up. I think it's a mixture of oil and dirt.

Well... good thing it was time for my 5k service so I decided to change the oil and see if there's anything different about it, and nope, it seems ordinary. So it must be a leak somewhere. I so HOPE anyway. More pictures:

After this, I'll do a degrease and see if it's still there tomorrow.

What does the substance feel like? is it greasy? from the nature of your pictures i would say that it is a grease, possbily from your drive shaft boot, or whichever is in the picture there. the splatter pattern of the substance looks like it is due to a leak of a rotating component, hence the radial splatter.
in this picture below you can see that there is a little grease coming out of that boot. did u change this or get it changed recently? it may be a little loose hence allowing the grease to fly out.

Cheers

Yep, I got one of the CV joints changed, should I get it checked out or is there a way to tighten it?
I'll snap more photos to confirm.

i'm not sure if you can tighten the CV anymore now as they might have snapped off the excess. if you did the repair yourself then get another band, if not bring it back to the shop you took it to, and ask them why its that loose. you may need to top up the grease if to much has come out.
look at the pic i put in my previous reply, see the bottom left hand corner, look at the underside of that CV boot, see how the grease looks like it is just seeping out? not a good sign mate.
Cheers

Cheers again.
