how do you hook up an ammetre gauge? Sun, 05 January 2003 08:03 Go to previous message
I brought a set of three gauges the other day (ammetre, oil pressure and water temp). The water temp and oil pressure are pretty straight foward not requiring any imput from the electrical system of my car.

The ammetre on the other hand is a little harder, on the back of the gauge it has two sheilded posts one positive and one negative. I know if I just hook these up between my battery it is just going to blow the gauge. The instructions that came with the gauge are in spanish so I scanned in the text and did a rough conversion over the web. The instructions come out a little rough though looking like this. I can scan in the pictures too if anyone is interested.

Connections:

A. for cars with interruptor of starter magnetico:

1) to See figures 1.

2) Mount the amperimetro in the place desired, and direct the cables since this to the interrupor of starter magnetico.

3) In the large terminal of solenoide, where the cable is connected of the bateria, disconnect all the cables, except the thick cable of the bateria,

4) Connect all the cabies, previDmente descDnectados of the interruptor of DrrDnque in the step 3 juntos with a nut and a pemo.

5) Connect firmly one of the cables of the amperimetro to the group of cables of the step 4 and isolate them to be assured that the same do not touch no part of the chassis, motor, carroceriD, etc. of the vehiculo

6) Conevte the orto cable gula of the amperimetro to the terminals of the interruptor of starter magnetico, to which the thick cable is connected of the bateria (the same terminals since dande were disconnected the cables in the step 3)

7) with the dull motor light the forward high lights and observe the direccion of the movement of the needles of the amperimetro. Deberian senalar toward the left (-) (discharge). If senalan toward the right ( +) (load), invest the posicion of the cables in the subsequent part of the amperimetro.

Cool Despues to obtain the direccion appropriate, be assured to adjust all the connections. Tambien asequrese that no part of the cables conductors remain exposed, or they touch ground in some part of the vehiculo,

B. For cars with union of assembly of terminal separated or relay of horn:

1) To See figures 3

2) To See point A2

3) Disconnect the cable that goes since the borne positive of the bateria to the relay of the horn, or to the union of the terminal.

4) Connect one of the cables of the amperimetro to the borne of the terminal of where I am removed the main cable.

5) Conevte firmly the other positive cable disconnected in the step 3, and aisleo of any contact of ground.

6) Follow the instructions of the steps A7 and AB.

C. For cars with the starter of solenoide mounted upon the starter:

1) See the figure 3.

2) See the step A2.

3) Disconnect the cable but pequeno (red) of the terminal of solenoide, where the thick cable of the bateria this finished.

4) Connect one of the cables guides of the amperimetro recien removed of the terminal of the bateria of solenoide and isolate the union.

5) Conevte the other cable guides of the amperimetro to the positive terminal of the bateria of solenoide.

6) See the steps A7 v AB.

I also went to the Autometer web site and for there ammeter it says to hook up one post to the positive of the battery and the B+ alternator output. I have a 4A-C power Toyota Tercel and it has a B lug on the alternator.

What do you guys think I should do? I might stick some small fuses on the wire and connect the gauge up between the positive battery terminal and the B on the alternator, if that does not work then to the main alternator wire.
