Is there any way you can determine whether a car requires a coil and ignitor with a resister or without?

My only thoughts on the use of resisters were than if you ran 12v over the old points type system you'd hammer the points and burn them out quickly, hence the resister dropped voltage at the points to ~6v.

However I've seen a few of the later Toyotas running coils and ignitors with resistors - is it to keep the ignitor cooler perhaps?

Thoughts/Comments? Anyone?
