M series engine comparison (Flywheels, Sumps, Engine mounts) Wed, 29 June 2005 12:21 Go to previous message
I've taken some pictures that may be of use, it's information that I feel may be helpful to some persons at some stage.

I'll list this so people might be able to use the shite search function to find this thread again one day 5M, 5ME, 5M-E 5m, 5me, 5me, 7m, 7mge, 7m-ge, 7M, 7MGE, 7M-GE.

First off, a comparison of a MA61 fylwheel and clutch (225mm) vs a MA70 flywheel and clutch (240mm).

You can see that the outer diameter of the 7M flywheel is quite a bit larger (obscures the ring gear). The rest is self explanatory. Of note is the oily looking substance on the 7M flywheel, this was just to avoid it rusting any further during storage.

Secondly we have a comparison of a front sump (MX83) vs a mid rear sump (MA70). Of note, if you wish to change from a mid rear sump to a front sump or vice versa, you will be require to drill a 10.5mm hole into the engine block for the oil dipstick, and of course plug the existing dipstick hole by some means. There is a casting mark where the new hole should be drilled regardless of original sump configuration. Images explain the other differences (also note the dong in the second picture, that is me Razz).

Finally we have a comparison of MZ10 engine mounts vs MA70 (early model before the crossmember change) engine mounts, I suspect any front sump (bar late model MX83's) M series engine mounts are the same e.g. MX62, MX73, MX83 (early models before the crossmember change), MA61, MZ10, MZ11, MZ12 etc. As the picture show they bolt up perfectly, even around the oil cooler drain and return lines. The MA70 mounts are from an early MA70 as well (86).

I hope this information is useful to people as a reference source one day in the future. If someone (Ed?) wants to move this into the tech & conversion sticky, by all means feel free.

Cheers
Wilbo
