Its a manual (r154)....
Pics are here...
http://www.pbase.com/duttonrally/nsw05_78
Clutch problems (I blew off the clutch fluid hose) and boost controller ineptness (is that a word??) led to the slow time...
I'll have to go down to WSID in the next week or two and do a proper run.
The car was the first 1J conversion in Australia (that I know of).... old school 1J

Paul, awesome to see your celica back on the road, and see it getting track work. i reckon your celica is the sexiest in the country, have loved it since i first seen it 4 or 5 years ago, the dish on the rear simmons looks awesome and i love the green paint.
if you are heading down to wsid, can you pm me if you dont mind, would love to come down and watch, and video tape.

originally wasnt going to as i fly out for the USA the following weekend and wanted my money to go over there. but now they have made sport compact a championship and this is the first round, just got to find the money.
out of 3 events i have made the finals twice and walked away with a trophy and prize money. so i spose i would say i am very competitive in my class and if these rounds were part of a championship i would be whipping some big competition ie theo woolett and rob barac who havent made the finals in the last three events. any they have big sponsor dollars.
my next 12 months goal is not to get more power out of what i have, just try to get down to minimum wieght and stay conservative and try to win this sport compact series over the 6 events, hopefully i can pick up some sponsorship dollars along the way.
a sydney event costs $800 with a tune, fuel and getting the car there.
a QLD event will be more like $1300 with transport accomodation etc.
but hey thats racing, and i love it.
RX engineering will have about 15 cars in total and 3 should be in my class.

can anyone tell me a bit about the setup in the navara ute?
I am aiming to try for around 400rwhp then will look at a 2J bottom end, would be interested in learning about the 500rwhp setup, could point me in the right direction for mine (turbo selection etc)

if your running a manual box. 400 rwhp will be easy
3540 garrett, manifold, 45mm wastegate, microtech and 550 cc injectors.
same setup with a auto you'll make 380 rwhp on a conservative dyno.
obviously a 3.5 inch exhaust and cat and decent intercooler, say 600x300x76.
seeing as your in brisbane, i would suggest going to see bruce aty hardcore racing components at logan. they have done 15 or more 1.5jz's and have jz series engines making great numbers and reliable horsepower. they also have a soarer runnning 9.88 1/4 miles, if drag racing is your preferred motorsport that will mean something.

15 1.5JZ's! Where the hell are they hiding!
I agree with Shane except I think a GT3040 would be big enough. Most people use the .82 AR one.
Other options are HKS t3G's, hybrid GCG ct12a's, blitz K27 etc.

last night i went to WSID with paul OWGOOR and Matt HYPO77.
OWGOOR ran a 12.6 at 113 MPH first run, then a 13.0 then a 13.9 the car looked really quick in the mid section of the runs, due to street tyres 60 foot times were 2 plus's. i cant remember the exacts. i believe bolt on some drag radials and this thing will give the 11's a good run. paul did punish a xr6 turbo ute on the 12.6 with the owner of the falcon ute a little conused as to what he just witnessed, a little green toyota blowing his doors off. thanks for the invite paul.
HYPO77 ran his first 2 passes in the 11's. then after a chat matt decided to drop the tyre pressures to 8 psi. the tyres werent producing much smoke, he said they hadnt been used for 6 months or so. it was decided a big burnout was in order which he did and on this run he ran a 10.70 at 133mph, a 1.69 60 foot was a result of popping the clutch twice as he thought it bogged down. we had a look at the tape and it didnt, so next pass out went with the same strategy 8000 rpm launch after a big burnout, he ran a 1.56 sixty footer 10.46 et at 133 mph. on this pass he ran a xygt falcon that runs 10.50's in super sedan class, so it was a great time to run next to a loud, angry 8 and win.
the bar has certainly been lifted boys and girls, dont be suprised if we see a nine second pass out of matts car by the end of the year.

Thanks for the detailed report. I will hopefully update the list tonight but I have some final prep things to do on my car before it hits the dyno for high boost tune tomorrow.
Only 3 more 12 sec passes to make it a 12 sec bump spot. My car will be hitting the strip for the first time on the 30th July as well as my mates T67 manual jzz30 so with any luck it could be only 1 more 12 sec pass required
I am not expecting too much being my first ever drag race though but it will be fun

Updated list 4 more 12 second passes to make the 12 second bump spot. And who would have guessed that tuning genius Martin Donnan with a big hp soarer is on the bump spot now
Oh yeah, I know of another big single 1jz torana that was meant to be at Willowbank last night but was not ready. So that is another to look out for.

ET's only happen when a car is completely sorted, ie suspension tyres, clutches.
martin claimed a power level and he backed it up with his MPH. his MPH is good for a 10.99 with a sixty foot in the 1.6 region which with a good set of tyres it would have done.
he had standard road tyres and a triple plate racind clutch which was either in or out and had a rooted diff, not the ideal thing for getting 300 rwkw of the line.
i would say there is plenty more bull shit said on forums about power levels and the cars respective MPH reading than in zoom magazine.

well the above proves your point about forums.so you are saying multi plate clutches are no good for drag racing?and i take it he has an lsd and the plates are stuffed?why would you drag race it then?bit like taking a surfboard with no fins surfing or or having a parachute that only half opens!
and what are standard road tyres?ive always understood there to be street legal tyres and race tyres.wow big jump from 13.19 to 10.9 with a change to street legal race tyres?which tyres are they hoosier street legal?yes thats correct about forums, but the people on the forums arnt payed and people dont pay to read them now do they.but some of us know real power figures that are attainable for both limited life engines and reliable engines threw R&D.

yea, what i am saying is put a different clutch behind it, put a plate type instead of a clutch type LSD in, put some DOT drag radial rubber and have a tweak with the suspension and it would run times. Martin cars was bought and sold 2 or 3 times since that article and hasnt been run again, it was never really put together to be a drag purpose car as it had hard suspension, low profile tyres and a savage clutch.
surf board without fins, good point, maybe some people just like to go out and have fun, i dont recall any one claiming in the magazine it was the fastest thing on earth or that it was going to run a 9.
why do people drag race vr commodore station wagons at WSID and pull 19 sec quarters, who knows, at least they are out there having a go. full credit too them.
i know i would have just as much fun pulling a 19 sec quater in my standard toyota starlet life as much as i do running a 10 in the cressida.

Good idea.
Would love to come down but car doesn’t fit into a class at the moment anyway and still have to get stuff sorted. Cant get any time off work either as I just had holidays. Hope it turns out well with a lot of entries to keep the championship alive.
I am still waiting to hear what happened at that sport compact open forum that was in Brisbane about a month back too. Pretty slack I think.

BTW did you use the lockup to increase the MPH or were there other changes to the engine?

can anyone say"talk shit know nothing"
a very good case in point for not listerning to what they say in the mags.

Just a note on this (i know its an old post) but Motor took a 996 Turbo S to WSID. Their data (Vbox GPS based timing device) for the run was about .2 secs slower then the ET shown by the track timer as it starts recording as soon as the wheels move (spin) rather than when they cross the startline. In an AWD car like a 911 this minor difference in distance made a decent difference in the ET's.

used the lock up.
i really need to do some testing to find out and what point of the track is the best to use it.
although the MPH only increased that 1 and a bit, the feeling inside the car was like i was doing mach 3 compared to when i ran my 10.7 at 125.48 mph
