KE55 keeps stalling when hot/thrashed.. Tue, 12 July 2005 02:46 Go to previous message
Hey,

Took the Corolla out for a drive yesterday and had some "problems".. Thankfully I was only doing a lap around the block!

The car had been warming up for about 10-15 minutes, just idling away. Doesn't have any probs starting, usually take about 2 turns before it kicks in.

I'd driven out the driveway, turned onto the road and headed off. Hit the first corner and gave it a rev whilst dropping down a gear.. Had the thing accelerate a little bit then started to die. Pressing the accelerator didn't help at all, it just kept dying. Put it in neutral and the engine stopped completely, the car rolled to a stop.

Got out and pulled the lid off the carby, which resulted in a bit of black smoke coming out. I'm thinking this is the biggest indicator of whatever the problem is, as I've had it do this before, with the same problem/symptons, except last time it started after letting it sit for about a minute (with the top off the air cleaner).

After taking the top off the air cleaner, it tried to crank several times, with it nearly starting a couple.. I stopped, fearing the battery would die as well. So I grabbed the pliers and pulled the line off the filter, filling a jar with some fuel.. Poored it down the carby and it started again, then stalled.... Did the same again, this time it ran fine.

Drove up the road a bit, came to another corner and tried to give it to it again, only to have it die on me again about 500m up the road. Rinse, repeat (more fuel down carby) and the cars going again..

So, any ideas?? I'm wondering if maybe it's the fuel pump or filter, possibly restricting the amount of fuel getting to the carby.. Or, it could be a really bad valve, letting exhaust back through the carby (smoke), stopping the good air from mixing with the fuel. I don't know if that's possible though.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
