Gearbox leak from speedo plug -> overfilling?

ok, this has been an issue that has been irritating me for some time now and it's time to put it to rest 
Installed the new g-box a while back.
Filled it till oil started running out of the fill hole (car is level).
Drive.
Starts leaking from speedo plug
Get worried, install new o-ring on speedo.
Fill g-box till oil starts running out of fill hole (level car), re-insert plug.
Still leaks!
Get worried I might risk damage to my box.
Today:
Jack car up level after leakage for a month or so.
Confirm oil mess around speedo plug and oil mess on pipes etc etc in there everywhere
Take fill plug out and insert little finger.
Lo and behold, oil on my finger.
Raise back of car 3cm or so. Oil comes out of fill hole.
How is this possible!? After leakage and all.
I conclude that I had overfilled the box using the oil pump (manual) and the speedo plug was the weakest link for an overfull gearbox, so oil was forced out.
However, even if it WAS too full, why would it have leaked? Oil doesn't increase in size with heat.. so??
And now, I am worried that it may not actually be correctly full, and i might damage my box, but reading point 5 from today makes me think that it HAS to be correct.
