ST162 auto gearbox troubles...

well, the gearbox in my friends SX 3sge st162 celica doesnt work...
its an auto. it drives fine in reverse, but has no forward gears. pulled the bottom cover off, and the gearbox oil was clean and had no burnt oil or 'shrapnel' in it. in fact, there was nothing suspect at all.
what could the problem be, and what should we look for?
and, how much fluid does the geatbox hold?
