Well can anyone tell me what purpose disc brake shims serve?
I have done a conversion and there are no shims and I think there should be.

I believe they are to reduce or eliminate brake squeal. Haven't quite worked out how they do it though.

Prevents aferomentioned squeal by "towing in" the pad so the front edge hits the disc first. Push bikes are set up the same way for the same reason.
