1ggte overfueling

Just chasing some advice.
Changed the engine on the 23 over xmas. The previous engine was running ok, just had a blown head gasket, but showed no signs of overfueling. I was replacing a mk2 engine with a mk3 engine, so I swapped long motors retaining only the exhaust manifold and the inlet manifold. This means that I retained the existing turbos, throttle body, sensors, fuel rail, injectors, etc.. One reason for this is that the loom on the mk3 is different - different computer plugs, injector plugs, sensor plugs.
So having set the scene - as the car comes on boost it gets soft and starts blowing out great clouds of black smoke (fuel). It seems to be better on full boost, although some times it can be soft there and have problems getting over 10psi.
Initial thoughts are a leak in the inlet piping (that is between the turbo and the throttle body) that is bleeding off boost but the airflow meter would still be asking for lots of fuel. Can't find it though - may have to strip out the grill and have a real good look. I have tried spraying carby cleaner everywhere to see if it is sucking air off boost but as it is idling great not sure that I have any hope here.
Any further ideas???

yeah my one is running rich too, on the dyno it dipped below 10:1, but I got the thought that sensor was screwy as it died on the next few runs and they had to replace it with a newy.. my idle aint perfect so I'm hunting leaks... finaly got a guage on the boost too and it is like how you describe... car drives fine though.

Hey Bugman,
What sensor was it that was stuffed on yours? mine also runs rich, and it puffs fuely smoke out at idea!
But can anyone help me here: ......it hunts a little bit on idle (up and down) , and then it sorts its self out, BUT if u touch the accelerator again it has hunt and fix itself all over again!!
Sorry i cant help you out a bit craig. but im stumped here too!!

I think I found a leak ths arvo from the booster line. the bost seems to hold steady now at about 9-9.5psi at the inlet manifold which is about right, given a 1psi drop across the stock coler. seems to ideal smoother but I'll give it a bit of a run before I'm satisfied.
also my boost guage(if you could call it that) only read positive pressure so I'm not sure how smooth the ideal vacum is.

hey guy's i have a Q about your 1g-gte engine.
i have a friend in the carrabean who has asked me to chase up a full gasket kit for one of these engines.. i have looked through all the books at work, and even rung a toyota mob. they didnt seem to be able to find a gasket kit for one of these engines at all....
so is it a fully imported engine? where do you guy's get bit's from for this engine?
thanks.....

It is an imported engine, never sold in Aus and as far as I know never sold outside of Japan.
Apparently the IS200 Lexus has a 1G-GE in it, but I am not sure if the head gaskets are the same. I would have thought the Turbo ones would be copper or at least stronger.
You need to track down a toyota dealer that has an import spares department. I know that Castle Hill Toyota in Sydney has an import department and can get the parts, however they don't really stock anything, so you still have to wait for delivery from Japan.
Good Luck

I've red a few mags and seen whole page add for companies who sell gaskets for all manner of motors and noticed they had the 1g-gte listed.

hunting at idle can also be caused by a lean mixture
or burnt valves
or obviously a vacuum leak or idle air metering problem
cheers

I put my money on Intake plumbing leak....do the intake pressure test....I did the test onh my VR4 and found small seepage leaks which is only visible under boost....
havent try it on my 1G-Gte tho..the process should be the same...

It ended up costing me $290 to find my problem!! Booked the car into Evo in canberra - appears as though in the 3 days that I was fitting the new engine a wasp built its nest in the fuel return line. Wolla - ended up with 100psi fuel pressure and so overfueling. By the time they had found that and replaced all of the hose, filter and clamps I was up for shitloads.

Holy shit! The things that happen eh?
At least you've fixed it now.
We still haven't met up since I've been in Canberra! Maybe I should organise another get together down here...
