7MGE Oil leak Mon, 29 August 2005 09:11 Go to next message
Hey Guys,

Wondering if you guys can help me out here, i've got a MX83 with the 7MGE motor, the other day when i was doing the usual inspections of an oil and stuff, i pulled out my spark plug leads and found a large quantity of oil where the spark plug sits..

Wondering what is the cause of this, could it be from the rocket cover gasket? or something major can the problem be fixed at home?

If anyone has an any idea what the problem is any help would be much appreiciated.

Cheers,
Mike

Not sure on costs of the cam cover seals, give your local Toyota dealer a call and even try your local parts shop eg Supercheap Auto's... To replace the seals you remove the air intake pipe that runs over the cam covers, unscrew the 12 phillip head screws (6 on each cover) lift the cam cover of, remove the old rubber seals and install the new seals... But before you do this do the following...

Give the 12 screws a bit of a nip up, clean the oil out from the spark plug wells etc and leave for a few days while driving the car. Then check to see if it has leaked if it has replace the seals if not keep an eye out whenever you pop the bonnet. I hope what I told you makes sense and helps you out.

When I rebuilt my 7M I used after markert seal kit, both the head and the cam covers were clean but after a weeks running I had the same problem.

To fix it this time I put the cam covers back on with Black Toyota Gasket Sealer. A lillte bit expensive but it did the trick no more leaks. Its propbalby the best gasket sealer I have used.

So for a short verson, buy new seals, and toyota gasket goupe and assmebly with sealant on both sides of the seal. Also seal that black piece of plastic to the head. It will be harder to pull apart next time though.

Go to a bolt specialist if you want new bolts but I really couldn't see how putting different bolts would help.
