stroking my 2tgeu Mon, 05 September 2005 20:15 Go to next message
ok i have given up on the turbo idea for now so i am just wondering wat it takes to stroke my 2tgeu.

i have a 3tgte crank, do i need 3tgte pistons or will 2tgeu pistons fit??

is it worth doing??

2T crank is 70mm. 3T crank is 78mm. Rods are the same. Have a think about which pistons to use.

lilcrash,

The 2T-G pistons as an answer to the thinking bit cannot be used.

The stroking of the 2T-G is very worth while. With the extra stroke and an oversize piston it can be taken out to 1940cc.

This will give a very drivable motor with heaps of low down power and will still rev to 6500 with stock cams, standard tune and jetting.

Best thing no-one will know what is inside as the authorities will still see the 2T engine number which relates to 1600cc.

To run the 3T crank in the 2T-G block, the block will have to be relieved to clear the con rod as it swings around. You will see where the crank and rods hit when they are dummied in place.

3T-GTE pistons result in too lower compression.

Stock 3T pistons would be a place to start but they do not have the fly-cuts to clear the valves. This can be done by a competent machine shop. Copy the cuts on the 2T-G piston. If there is doubt about this then all I can say I have done it before. There is plenty of meat in the piston crown. Mind you they are not as strong as a custom forged piston.

Custom pistons are the go, though.

Any of the work will involve completly stripping the motor down.

So if you decide to go custom pistons then make them 4mm oversize to 89mm to give the 1940cc with the 3T crank.

Regards

Rodger

well i will definately not be goin turbo now. my turbo is has shaft play.

i think i might just go bak to stock, but i will put the 3tgte oil pump and injectors in so that if i find a turbo suitable i will do it later.

thanx for the help

doesn't this just depend on what model block you use?

Hokey,

Yes you are correct, it does depend on which block is used. If you were to start with the 3T block there would be no problem.

But if lilcrash starts with his 2T-G block there is no outward change to the motor which then means he can run the same engine number and this removes some hassle at rego time or if the car is pulled over for inspection.

I have heard the later model 2T-GEU block does not require modification to fit a 3T crank... not 100% certain about that one though.

Late model 2T-G blocks are the same casting as 3T blocks, just stamped with an engine number (2T#### or 3T####) to correspond with the internals (1588CC or 1770CC).

Late block is p/n 11411-28010 (possibly others also).
Early block is p/n 11411-26012 (possibly others also).

Date of change to the later casting would roughly correspond with the start of 3T motor production, approx 1980 I suspect. Accordingly 2T-G built after this date would use later casting.

In my experience,
11111-88222 head (and earlier) = 11411-26012 block;
11111-88260 head (and later) = 11411-28010 block.

IIRC 88260 head came in carb (2T-GU, 2T-GR) or EFI (2T-GEU) versions, from 88261 onwards 2T-G were EFI only (ie. 2T-GEU).

Ok Rotorola

How things change topics.

Anyway if you do not find a suitable distributor supposedly for the 2T-GEU (injected 2T-G) then you can use a stock 2T dizzy.

There are ways and means of turning a stock 2T dizzy into a dizzy more suited to the 2T-G spec as all the parts required are inside.

I'll PM you with details if you require.

hey guys,
i'm also thinking of stroking my 2tg and have a few questions about the pistons.

yrhkira,
you said that 2t pistons wont fit, and that 3t ones need some work. i read in another thread that 3t pistons are not all that strong anyway. i dont really want to spend a fortune on forgies.
are there any other pistons that will fit? perhaps some that require the cylinders to be bored slightly, or will this end up costing as much as the forgies anyway?

thanks
chris

but to do a good job of it will cost you about $1500-$2000. but don't do a chunky job of it coz the old twin cams are getting hard to find now Mad

Aftermarket rods are pretty much always a good thing. Necessary? Dunno.

ok il try my 3tgte rods for now and see wat happens.

i have the gex2 2tgeu engine (numberless head)79-83 model, will this need to be modified for the 3tgte crank??

one more question.

if i run the 3tgte block will i need to modify the engine mount on the turbo side because of the return??
on this note would running the 2tgeu block easier, like i woudl just run the return to the sump instead.

wat woudl be a better idea??
