Sticking Trip meter

My damm Trip meter keeps sticking and I have no idea why!
I had it out the other day and I lined all the numbers back up (thought it might have been one number just a little out of alignment?). I wasn't really keen to take the back off the cluster as it look like a bout 100 screws (a little exaggeration...).
Also how do you get the fan speed controller out? My low speed setting doesn't work and I was going to get it out and solder the low resistance coil back together but I can't get it out! Does it plug in or will I have to cut it out and the put it back in after I have fixed it?
Anyway any ideas on how to fix either of these easily?
Cheers
Wilbo
