carb setup - where to put the fuel reg ??

im setting up a 6psi regulated fuel system.
from everything ive read, a bypass type regulated pressure system is the most ideal (versus a dead head system)...
however, noone actually states the best place to put the regulator. im guessing having the reg right up in the enginebay, near the jet is the way to go (bottom diagram) - mainly because i figure you'll see less pressure drop from the reg output to the jet, thus making the metered pressure at the jet more reliable.
however, what about what ive drawn at the top? reg close to the pump, with a long line to the front of the car. if i make that line line a decent size, i imagine the pressure drop to be minimal?
it just saves a whole bunch of fucking about running 2 fuel lines the whole length of the car. atleast you still get some benefit of having the bypass system (and its adjustability in a no flow situation)...
...or am i way off, and the pressure drop is just too great, and im better off just sucking it up and running those two long fuel lines??
