22re burning heaps of oil

My car has probably done 400k max since the last service. It got a bit of a thrashing on the weekend. Today I checked the oil and was nearly on the bottom of the crosshatch pattern on the dipstick. I put in some more oil and it used over a litre. I have checked for oil leaks and there doesnt seem to be any, I also revved it to redline to see how much smoke was comeing out and there was barely any.
Anyone got any idea what it could be? If it was burning oil I would see it wouldnt I?
On an unrelated matter (?) my idle fucked up after having a little run in the dirt. I just adjusted the idle screw and it fixed it up. This seem all good?
