E58 now installed into AW11 but a problem remains! Sun, 09 October 2005 01:07 Go to previous message

Howdy,
Well I finally got my E58 LSD intalled into the MR2. A machine shop bored the hole in the 'front' side of the box and a rubber lip seal was pressed in and it looks absolutely factory! Then I simply took the E51 shifter and bolted it in, and bolted on the the external E51 shifter parts...truly bolt up! I could feel the shifter moves more freely straighy away compared to the E51.

The short passenger side drive shaft was a perfect fit, all that was required was a 22mm hub nut since the threaded portion of the E58 stub axle is 22mm instead of 19mm like the SC MR2. Splines are identical.

The longer driver side axle however is a problem!
It is too long by about atleast 40mm or something. For the meantime I found the E51 shaft can do the job, but its gearbox end is designed to have a c-clip, unlike the E58, so the axle doesn't go in far enough by about 2-3mm I'd say. It in there for now, and the oil seal is fine, but it's not ideal.

Is there someone out there who has solved this little issue with another toyota part? Does Anyone know if any SW20 drive shafts can be used?

Cheers, Nick
